How to Convert Your Airtel, Vi or Jio SIM to eSIM, and Whether to

Switching to eSIM takes a few hours and can block SMS and OTPs for 24 hours. Step-by-step for Airtel, Vi and Jio, plus when it is a bad idea.

Airtel and Vi let you switch a number from a physical SIM to an eSIM without visiting a store, and Jio's app route works for many users, as long as your phone supports eSIM. You will need the phone's 32-digit EID; Vi and Jio also ask for your email address. The process takes a few hours end to end, and one rule catches almost everyone out: Airtel and Vi both state that after the switch, incoming and outgoing SMS, including OTPs, are blocked for 24 hours, in line with the government rule on SIM swaps. Expect the same on Jio, and do not convert on a day you need to log into your bank or pay a bill.

What is an eSIM, and does my phone support it?

An eSIM is a SIM chip built into the phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you download your operator's profile to it. Airtel lists eSIM-capable phones from Apple, Google Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, Vivo, Oppo and OnePlus, but support varies model by model. The quickest test: dial *#06#. If an EID shows up alongside the IMEI, your phone can take an eSIM. Write that 32-digit EID down carefully; every operator asks for it, and Vi warns that a wrong EID makes the activation fail.

How do I convert my Airtel SIM to eSIM?

Airtel's own eSIM page runs the conversion through the Airtel Thanks app:

  • Log in to the app with the number you want to convert, open Shortcuts and tap "upgrade to eSIM".
  • Choose this device or another device, and enter the EID.
  • Type in the OTP that Airtel sends to your number.
  • Answer the verification call, which comes about 10 minutes later, and confirm.
  • Download the eSIM profile in your phone settings and turn it on.

Airtel says the eSIM activates within 2 hours of the profile download, and the profile has to be set up within 4 hours of starting the request or the request is cancelled. Your physical SIM keeps working until then.

How do I convert my Vi SIM to eSIM?

Vi does it by SMS, for both prepaid and postpaid users. From your Vi number, text 199 in this format: eSIM, space, your EID, space, 1 for iPhone or 2 for Android, space, your email ID. Reply ESIMY to 199 within 15 minutes, then answer the automated consent call and press 1. The QR code and profile arrive by email from Vi, and you add it from your phone's Add eSIM menu.

How do I convert my Jio SIM to eSIM?

Jio's steps are where guides disagree most, and we could not confirm a single current method on a Jio page. The route described most consistently is in the MyJio app: search for eSIM, verify your email, enter your EID and confirm with an OTP sent to your Jio number. Guides then describe a wait of about two hours for an automated call from Jio before the eSIM profile is issued. Listen to that call carefully: one guide notes that pressing 1 cancels the request rather than confirming it. If the app does not offer the option for your number, ask at a Jio store.

Should you switch to eSIM?

Here is the comparison that matters:

Physical SIMeSIM
If the phone is stolenThe SIM can be pulled out and used in another phoneCannot be stolen without taking the whole phone
Changing phonesMove the card in secondsNeeds a new profile from the operator
Phone dies or breaksPut the SIM in any old handsetGoing back to a physical SIM means a store visit
Two numbersNeeds a second slotOn phones with both, run one eSIM and one physical SIM

Our take: eSIM is worth it on a phone you plan to keep, mainly because, as the US Federal Communications Commission points out, an eSIM cannot be stolen without taking the whole phone, so a pickpocket cannot slip your SIM into another handset and receive your OTPs. It is a bad idea if you swap handsets often or keep a cheap backup phone for emergencies, since that backup cannot take your number in a hurry. If your phone does go missing, block it through Sanchar Saathi, and be wary of anyone who calls offering to "upgrade" your SIM for you: that is a known fraud pattern, the same family as the digital arrest scam.
