DigiYatra at Cochin Airport: How to Enrol, Where It Works, What It Stores
DigiYatra launched at 22 gates of Cochin airport's domestic terminal in 2023. How to enrol with Aadhaar or a driving licence, and the usual glitches.
DigiYatra at Cochin International Airport lets you walk from the terminal door through security on your face alone, using e-gates, 22 at launch, in the domestic terminal since the system went live on 2 October 2023. It is free, it is voluntary, and once your ID is in the app it takes a boarding pass scan and a glance at a camera. As of October 2026 it covers domestic flights only at CIAL; DigiYatra for international departures is only at the planned-trial stage.

How to enrol and use DigiYatra at Kochi
Setup is one-time; after that each trip is a boarding pass and your face.
- Install: download the official DigiYatra app (Android or iOS).
- Register: sign up with your mobile number (Aadhaar-linked if you use Aadhaar) and pull your ID from DigiLocker. Aadhaar was the original route; a driving licence from DigiLocker has been accepted since August 2026.
- Selfie: take the face photo in the app; this is matched against your ID to create your credential.
- Web check-in: get your boarding pass from the airline's website or app.
- Add the boarding pass: scan its barcode or upload it inside DigiYatra, then tap Share so the airport receives your details.
- At the airport: at the DigiYatra entry gate, scan the boarding pass QR code and look at the camera, then use the separate DigiYatra lane at security.
Haven't enrolled? Airports also offer kiosk-based registration for same-day travel, but that needs your explicit consent before your face is captured.
Which terminal at Cochin airport has DigiYatra?
The domestic terminal. When CIAL launched the system in October 2023, the e-gates went into the domestic building, which is Terminal 1. If you are unsure which building your flight uses, our Terminal 1 vs Terminal 3 guide sorts it out.
International flights from Terminal 3 are a different story. Trials for international departures are planned for October to December 2026 at five airports, with Cochin expected to take part and Delhi and Mumbai likely to go first. That version reads your e-passport chip with an NFC-capable phone instead of Aadhaar, and even then immigration and emigration checks stay manual. So for a Gulf flight, carry your passport and plan for the usual queues.
Can I use DigiYatra without Aadhaar?
Yes, as of August 2026. Before that, Aadhaar was the standard route, uploaded as an XML file or pulled from DigiLocker. In early August 2026 DigiYatra added the driving licence, fetched through DigiLocker with your consent, and you can hold both and pick either as your primary credential. The licence has to already be in your DigiLocker account, so set that up first with our DigiLocker guide for Kerala. A passport-based credential is planned but not live for domestic enrolment.
Separately, in a July 2026 public interest case, the Kerala High Court remarked that Aadhaar should not prima facie be compulsory for registration if other ID exists.
Is DigiYatra data safe?
The design keeps your data on your phone. The government and the Digi Yatra Foundation say there is no central storage of personally identifiable information, and your ID and travel details sit in an encrypted wallet in the app. According to the Foundation, the copy shared with the departure airport is purged within 24 hours of the flight leaving, and uninstalling the app deletes your credentials and travel history.
That is the operators' own account rather than an independent finding. The practical catch is simpler: in March 2024 every user had to delete the old app and re-create their credentials in a new one, and any phone change or reinstall means enrolling again.
Is DigiYatra mandatory, and is it worth it?
No. The Civil Aviation Ministry stated in January 2024 that DigiYatra is purely voluntary, after complaints that passengers were being pressured into enrolling, and airports were told to keep it that way. You can always use the regular ID-and-boarding-pass lane, and you should carry both anyway as a backup.
Common problems are mostly predictable:
- Boarding pass not shared from the app, so the entry gate does not recognise you. Re-scan it before leaving home.
- Face not matching at the gate. Twins were flagged as more than one passenger at Mumbai in January 2026. Step across to the manual lane.
- New phone, lost credentials. Re-enrol before the trip, not at the door.
Our view: if you fly domestic out of Kochi more than a few times a year, the one-time setup is worth it, because the separate DigiYatra lane at Terminal 1 security is where it pays off. For one trip a year, or for international travel as of October 2026, skip it. Either way, once you are through, sort your ride home with our prepaid taxi vs app cab guide.
