Cochin Airport Terminal 1 vs Terminal 3: Which One Do You Need

Cochin International Airport runs three passenger terminals, not two, and knowing which one to head for saves a wasted trip across the campus: Terminal 1 handles all domestic flights, Terminal 3 handles every international departure and arrival, and Terminal 2 is a small executive facility most travellers never see.

Terminal 1: the domestic terminal

Terminal 1 was originally CIAL's international terminal before it was renovated and reopened in December 2018 as the dedicated domestic building. It covers roughly 55,700 square metres with 56 check-in counters and 7 aerobridges, and it carries a solar carport generating 2.4 MW of power with parking for about 1,400 vehicles. Every domestic flight into or out of Kochi, IndiGo, Air India, Akasa and the rest, uses this terminal.

Terminal 3: the international terminal

Terminal 3 opened in March 2017 and is by far the largest of the three, spread across more than 150,000 square metres on four levels. It has 84 check-in counters, along with 30 immigration counters on arrival and 40 emigration counters on departure, plus its own 2.7 MW solar carport. International check-in sits on the ground level; immigration and the departure lounge, gates, duty-free and lounges included, are upstairs. If a flight is headed to the Gulf, Southeast Asia or anywhere outside India, this is the building.

Terminal 2 is a smaller, roughly 10,000 square metre facility built for business-class and private operations, with capacity for around 400 passengers at peak. Most travellers booking a standard commercial ticket will never need it, but it is worth knowing it exists so a stray reference to "T2" on a booking confirmation does not cause confusion.

Is Cochin airport solar powered?

Yes, and this is the airport's best-known claim: CIAL became the world's first fully solar-powered airport in August 2015, on the strength of a separate ground-mounted solar plant near its cargo complex. Getting between terminals

Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are on opposite ends of the same campus, connected by the airport's internal road network, not a walkway. A transfer between them, whether for a connecting flight or simply picking someone up on a different terminal, means a shuttle or a short taxi ride around the perimeter road rather than a corridor crossing.
