Yes, there is a museum in Edappally: the Kerala Museum, beside Pathadipalam metro station on the National Highway, just past Lulu Mall as you head towards Aluva. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am, closed on Mondays and government holidays, with last entry at 4.20pm. Adult tickets cost Rs 100 or Rs 150 depending on which page of the museum's own website you read, children pay Rs 50, and one day pass covers all three buildings: a Kerala history light-and-sound show, a modern Indian art gallery and a dolls museum.

Where is the Kerala Museum located?

The museum's address is Metro Pillar 349, Pathadipalam, Edappally. By metro, get off at Pathadipalam and ask the station staff for the right exit; the museum is next door. By bus, the Pathadipalam stop is at the gate. By car, coming from the Edappally toll side towards Aluva, it is on the left just after Pathadipalam metro station, opposite Kinder Hospital, with parking for two- and four-wheelers inside the compound. For the lay of the land, our Edappally neighbourhood guide helps you get your bearings, and it pairs easily with a trip to Lulu Mall down the road.

How much are tickets, and when is it open?

The museum itself tells visitors to check its Google listing for the day's hours and any planned closures, which is sensible advice given its own pages disagree. Walk-in visitors can wait up to 35 minutes, because the history show runs in capped batches, so do not arrive at 4.15 and expect to see everything.

What is inside the Kerala Museum?

The museum was founded in 1984 by the entrepreneur R. Madhavan Nayar and opened to visitors in 1987. It is run by the Madhavan Nayar Foundation, a public charitable trust, and it used to be called the Museum of Kerala History. There are three separate buildings:

  • History Museum: a light-and-sound show of dioramas on 87 people who shaped Kerala, in English and Malayalam. The sculptures and dioramas are by Karamana Rajagopal. Shows run every half hour.
  • Art Gallery: opened in 1993, with nearly 230 works of modern Indian art, including Raja Ravi Varma, M.F. Husain and Jamini Roy.
  • Dolls Museum: around 150 dolls representing communities and dance forms from across India.

Photography is allowed in the Dolls Museum and the History Museum but not in the Art Gallery. There is a small cafe behind the History Museum for snacks and drinks.

Is the Kerala Museum worth visiting?

Yes, but for a different reason than most people go. The history show is old-school: static figures, a spoken commentary, the feel of a 1980s school trip. Children tend to enjoy it; adults may find it slow. The real reason to come is the art gallery, a serious collection of modern Indian painting that most people in Kochi have driven past for years without knowing it was there. Give it most of your time. School groups book visits through the museum office, so if you want a quiet walk-through, call ahead on 8129051881 to check. If you like this kind of afternoon, the Kerala Folklore Museum in Thevara and the Durbar Hall Art Gallery are the natural next stops. More in Things To Do.
