Kochi to Alappuzha: Train vs Bus vs Car, and Which One to Pick

Alappuzha is about 62 km south of Kochi along NH 66. The train is the quickest and cheapest way there: the fastest service between Ernakulam Junction and Alappuzha takes about 50 minutes, and second-class seats start at around Rs 60 on booking sites. A KSRTC bus from Vyttila takes roughly an hour and a half, and a car takes about an hour on a clear run, which is not what you will get on that stretch while the highway works continue.

What is the best way to go from Kochi to Alappuzha?

For most people on a day trip, the train. Here is how the three stack up (figures as of September 2026; fares change, so check before you travel):

How long is the train from Ernakulam to Alappuzha?

Anywhere from about 50 minutes to two and a half hours or more, depending on which train you catch. The route is the coastal line through Alappuzha, with 10 daily trains and 16 in all once you count the weekly and part-week services. Top of the list for speed is the Mangaluru-Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat, which does the hop in about 50 minutes; the Alleppey Superfast, the Netravati and a string of long-distance expresses also stop.

The catch is timing. Many of these are long-distance trains passing through, so departures bunch up at odd hours and some run late. Look at the day's timetable on the railway app before leaving home, and give yourself a buffer for the return. Unreserved second class is fine for a trip this short.

One more thing to plan for: Alappuzha station is not in the middle of the backwaters. The main houseboat boarding area, Finishing Point, is around 5 km from the station, so budget an auto ride of 10 to 15 minutes on arrival.

Is there a direct bus from Kochi to Alappuzha?

Yes, and plenty of them. KSRTC runs services to Alappuzha through the day, with the Vyttila Mobility Hub the most convenient boarding point for most of the city; buses also leave from the Ernakulam KSRTC stand. The journey takes roughly an hour and a half to two hours, depending on the type of service and the traffic around Aroor.

The bus wins when you live near Vyttila and the train timetable does not suit you. It loses on comfort and predictability; on a hot afternoon, crawling through the highway works around Aroor, the train will feel like a very good decision. When should you drive instead?

When there are three or more of you, when you have luggage, or when you are checking into a houseboat and want to arrive on your own schedule. The Alappuzha district administration puts the drive at about an hour on NH 66. Treat that as the best case.

The reason is the stretch between Aroor and Thuravoor, where the national highway is being rebuilt with an elevated road overhead:

• The Aroor-Thuravoor elevated highway is about 13.2 km long, extended from the originally planned 12.75 km.
• As of late September 2026, the work was reported to be about 93% complete, with a revised completion target of December 2026.
• Traffic below has been restricted at stages of the work; in late August 2026, a single-lane restriction towards Kochi during concreting produced a queue of about a kilometre past Chandiroor.

Until it opens, add a generous buffer to any drive, and avoid the evening return towards Kochi if you can. Once it does open, the car will become a much more attractive option.
