How to Spot a Fake Kerala Lottery Ticket or Prize Scam

A genuine Kerala lottery ticket is a paper ticket, bought in person from a licensed seller in Kerala at its printed price, with a QR code you can scan in the Lotteries Department's own app. A genuine prize never costs you money to collect: the only things taken out of a Kerala lottery prize are the agent's commission and income tax, both deducted from the winnings themselves. So any message that says you have won and asks you to pay first is a scam, every time, and the number to report it on is 1930.

Scammers borrow whichever draw is in the news, and at Onam that is the bumper. Nothing outside this table is specific to 2026.

How to verify a Kerala Lottery ticket?

Scan it. Kerala lottery tickets carry a QR code, and the department's official app, listed as Kerala Lottery Official (it was earlier called Bhagya Keralam), reads that code and tells you whether the ticket is genuine. After the draw the same app lets you check a ticket number against the result and track the status of a prize claim. Use the government app, not a look-alike scanner or result site.

Two rules from the department's own FAQ are just as useful as the scan. No ticket may be sold above its face value, so a Rs 500 Onam Bumper sold to you for more is a red flag on its own. And only physical tickets are sold, so a "ticket" that exists only as a screenshot or a PDF is not a Kerala lottery ticket at all.

How to check if a lottery ticket is original?

This is where the QR code has a blind spot. It confirms the ticket number is real; it cannot tell you whether the paper in your hand is the original or a copy. In September 2025 a lottery agent near Kattoor in Thrissur paid out on three colour photocopies of Samrudhi fourth-prize tickets, Rs 15,000 in all, because the QR codes scanned as prize winners. The original ticket had already been cashed at the Alappuzha Treasury on 23 September, four days before.

The people this trick hurts most are the small sellers who cash minor prizes on the spot. Onmanorama reported a case near the Tripunithura cricket ground on 23 August 2026 in which a man passed an elderly vendor a ticket with a forged draw date, claimed a Rs 5,000 prize, and walked away with Rs 2,150 in cash plus 33 tickets, bumper tickets among them. In September 2026, at Mayyanad in Kollam, a 62-year-old vendor lost Rs 4,000 on tickets where a pen had turned a 2 into a 0. So, if someone hands you a "winning" ticket:

• Scan the QR code, then read the printed number and draw date against the official result yourself.
• Look closely at the digits and the draw date; a pen stroke or a reprinted date is easy to miss at a glance and hard to miss once you look for it.
• Never swap cash or fresh stock for someone else's winning ticket; send them to an agency or the lottery office to claim it themselves.

Is the Kerala Lottery online genuine or not?

No. There is no genuine online Kerala lottery. Kerala banned online lotteries in 2005, and the department's FAQ says plainly that no agent may sell tickets through the internet or social media. In March 2026 the Deputy Director of the Kerala Lottery Directorate complained to the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police about a site called keralastatelottery.site, which used the department's emblem and photographs of ministers to sell "tickets" online. Anything that sells you a Kerala ticket through a website, an app or a WhatsApp number is not the lottery. What does a fake prize message look like?

In July 2026 Kerala Police set out the pattern: an ad on Facebook, WhatsApp or Telegram promising a huge bumper prize leads to a group or website dressed up in the Kerala State Lottery's name and logo, which posts "results" to look credible. You are asked for your mobile number to check your ticket, told you have won, and then asked for your name, bank account, IFSC code and Aadhaar number. Then come the fees, on a forged government letterhead: registration fee, processing charge, GST, tax clearance, security deposit. The caller does not need you to have bought a ticket. A Mangaluru man paid Rs 3,81,300 over twelve days in August 2026 after a caller said he had won Rs 8 lakh in a Kerala lottery and needed to pay the tax up front, then told him the prize had doubled and more tax was due.

• You cannot win a draw you did not buy a physical ticket for.
• Tax on a real prize is deducted from the prize at source; nobody asks you to pay it first.
• Any fee asked for before a prize is released means it is a scam.
