Sabarimala from Kochi: Getting There, Virtual Queue and Nilakkal Parking
Sabarimala is 150-plus km from Kochi. How to book the virtual queue, why cars stop at Nilakkal, the train and bus options, and the 5 km climb from Pamba.
Sabarimala is about 155 to 165 km by road from Kochi (Kerala Tourism puts Kochi airport at 154 km and Ernakulam, via Kottayam and Erumeli, at about 165 km), and getting there in the Mandala-Makaravilakku season takes three steps: book a slot on the virtual queue at sabarimalaonline.org, drive or take a bus to the Nilakkal base camp, where private vehicles park, and ride the KSRTC chain service to Pamba before the roughly 5 km climb to the Sannidhanam. The season usually opens in mid-November with the Malayalam month of Vrischikam and runs to around the third week of January.

When is the Sabarimala season?
The main pilgrimage has two parts. The 41-day Mandala season begins with the start of Vrischikam in mid-November and ends with the Mandala Pooja in late December; after a short closure the temple reopens for the Makaravilakku season, whose high point falls around 14 January. Exact dates change every year with the Malayalam calendar, so confirm them with the Travancore Devaswom Board before planning. For reference, the last completed season ran like this:

How do I book the Sabarimala virtual queue?
On sabarimalaonline.org, where booking usually opens in early November; for the 2025-26 season it opened on 1 November. Book as early as you can. Daily caps are set by the authorities and the Kerala High Court and can change within a season: in 2025 the plan was 70,000 a day through the virtual queue and 20,000 through spot booking, and on 19 November 2025 the High Court cut spot booking to 5,000 a day, initially until 24 November. Spot booking exists, but treat it as a backup rather than a plan; on the busiest days it runs out.
How to reach Sabarimala from Kochi by road?
Most Kochi pilgrims drive or take a bus towards Pathanamthitta district; the usual approaches run through Kottayam and Erumeli, or further south through Pathanamthitta town, which is 72 km from Sabarimala. The part first-timers get wrong is the end of the road:
- Nilakkal is the base camp. Parking at Pamba has not been allowed since the parking area there was damaged in the 2018 floods, so private vehicles park at Nilakkal, which has space for thousands of vehicles and is 23 km from the temple.
- KSRTC runs a chain service between Nilakkal and Pamba throughout the season.
- Roadside parking between Nilakkal and Pamba has been banned by the High Court because it blocks the chain buses.

Which is the nearest railway station to Sabarimala?
Chengannur, which Indian Railways named the Gateway of Sabarimala in 2009. During the season KSRTC runs buses to Pamba round the clock from the station compound. Kottayam and Tiruvalla are the other common rail heads, and published distances from the three stations to the temple run from about 85 to 96 km depending on the source and route, so check the bus timing rather than trusting a single number. What is the distance from Pamba to Sannidhanam?
About 5 km on foot, uphill. It is a steep climb, and on a peak-season day the queues on the way up can add hours. Pilgrims who take the traditional route from Erumeli instead walk about 61 km in all.
