Udyam registration, the government's MSME registration, is free and done entirely online at udyamregistration.gov.in. The official portal says no documents need to be uploaded: you need an Aadhaar number with a linked mobile for the OTP, and a PAN, with investment and turnover pulled automatically from PAN and GST records. From 1 April 2025, any business with up to Rs 2.5 crore in investment and Rs 10 crore in turnover counts as micro. If anyone asks you for money to register, you are not on the government site.

Is Udyam Registration free of cost?

Yes. The portal states that registration is totally free and that no fee is payable to anyone. The portal itself warns users to beware of fake sites, and third-party pages offering a "Udyam registration form" turn up in search results. Check the address bar for udyamregistration.gov.in before you type in your Aadhaar number. Paying a consultant here buys you nothing a free OTP cannot.

Who is eligible for an Udyam certificate?

Any enterprise that fits the micro, small or medium limits. Classification depends on both investment in plant, machinery or equipment and annual turnover. These are the limits the portal lists from 1 April 2025:

CategoryInvestment up toTurnover up to
MicroRs 2.5 croreRs 10 crore
SmallRs 25 croreRs 100 crore
MediumRs 125 croreRs 500 crore

A home bakery in Edappally, a print shop in Kaloor and a software services firm in Kakkanad can all qualify. Wholesale and retail traders are a special case: they can register, but only to claim priority sector lending from banks.

Can I get an Udyam certificate online?

Yes, and only online. The process runs on self-declaration:

  • Enter the Aadhaar number of the proprietor, the managing partner or the karta of an HUF, and verify with the OTP.
  • Validate the PAN. Companies, LLPs, co-operatives, societies and trusts also give their GSTIN.
  • Fill in the business name, address, bank details and activity.
  • Submit with a final OTP. You get a permanent registration number and an online certificate with a QR code.

There is no renewal. One enterprise gets one registration, and you add extra activities, manufacturing or services, to that same number rather than registering again. Anyone still holding an old EM-II or Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) registration has to register afresh on Udyam. Be honest with the figures: the portal warns that misrepresenting self-declared details attracts a penalty under section 27 of the MSMED Act.

What does registration actually get you?

The most useful benefit for a small supplier is getting paid. Under section 37(2)(g) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (section 43B(h) of the old 1961 Act), a buyer who owes a registered micro or small enterprise past the MSMED Act limit, 15 days without a written agreement and no more than 45 days with one, and has still not paid by the end of the financial year, can claim that expense only in the year it is actually paid. That is a reason for larger clients to clear your invoices on time. If they still do not, micro and small enterprises can file a delayed-payment complaint on the Ministry of MSME's ODR portal, odr.msme.gov.in, which replaced the Samadhaan portal for new complaints in October 2025. You need a valid Udyam registration to file. Register before you raise the invoice; MSME guidance says a registration obtained after the invoice date does not usually cover it.

Registration is also what banks and government schemes ask for when they check MSME status. It sits alongside, not in place of, the other paperwork a Kochi business needs: see our guides to GST registration and the Kochi trade licence.

Where can you get help in Kochi?

The District Industries Centre for Ernakulam is at Kunninpuram, Civil Station Road, Kakkanad, reachable on 0484 2421461 or gm.ekm.dic@kerala.gov.in. DICs are where the portal itself points businesses for help with registration. For other Kochi businesses and services, browse our Business Directory.
