What is a trade license and who needs one?
The trade license is Kochi Corporation's permission for a specific business to operate at a specific address, issued under the Kerala Municipality Act, 1994. It applies to essentially any commercial premises inside Corporation limits: shops, eateries, godowns, workshops and small manufacturing units all need it before they open, not after. It sits alongside, and is separate from, registration under the Kerala Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, so a new business in Kochi is usually dealing with both at once rather than one or the other.
How do I apply for a trade license in Kochi?
New applications can be filed online through Kerala's local self-government citizen portal or in person at the Corporation counter, and under the Kerala Municipality Act the application needs to go in within 30 days of the business actually starting, not before it opens. After submission, a health or sanitary inspector visits the premises to check it meets basic safety and hygiene standards before the Corporation secretary signs off and the fee gets collected. There is no single published fee schedule readily available online, but the figure commonly quoted for Kochi falls somewhere between roughly Rs 500 and Rs 10,000 a year depending on category, so check the Corporation's own schedule for your specific trade before budgeting around it.
