Kochi to Kodaikanal is about 300 km. Take the overnight Amritha Express to Palani and a bus up, or drive about 9 hours. Routes, fares, e-pass.
Kochi to Kodaikanal is about 300 km by road and takes about 9 hours by car, per Uber's route estimate, the last stretch up a ghat road from Palani. There is no direct state bus and no railway to the hill station itself: the cheapest smart route is the overnight Amritha Express from Ernakulam Town (dep. 12.35 am) to Palani (arr. 6.52 am), then a Tamil Nadu state bus up the hill, roughly 65 km and 2 hours. If you drive, check the Kodaikanal e-pass rules before you leave.

Which is the nearest railway station to Kodaikanal?
Palani, about 64 km away, according to Tamil Nadu Tourism. Kodai Road station, despite the name, is further, at about 80 km. From Kochi the useful train is the daily 16343 Amritha Express, which per its timetable leaves Ernakulam Town at 12.35 am and reaches Palani at 6.52 am. The 16128 Guruvayur-Chennai Express also runs daily, leaving Ernakulam Junction at 1.20 am and reaching Kodai Road at 12.05 pm, but that lands you in the middle of the day with the longer road still ahead.
Our pick is the Amritha to Palani. You sleep through the plains, and buses climb to Kodaikanal from Palani through the day.
Is there a bus from Kochi to Kodaikanal?
There is no direct KSRTC or TNSTC service; some private operators may run one, so check the booking apps. The workable chain is KSRTC from Ernakulam to Palani via Thrissur, Palakkad and Pollachi, about 250 km and around 7 hours 40 minutes, then a TNSTC bus from Palani up to Kodaikanal. A timetable listing updated in January 2026 showed 11 departures from Palani between 4 am and 6 pm, at about Rs 60. Timings change, so confirm on the operators' sites; our KSRTC online booking guide covers the Kerala leg.
How much does a taxi cost from Kochi to Kodaikanal?
As a guide, Uber's intercity page, updated June 2026, gave about Rs 7,668 on average for Uber Go or UberXL Intercity, one way; Uber Sedan Intercity was listed at Rs 10,919. Local taxi operators quote their own rates, often including the driver's stay for a return trip, so get a written quote that says whether tolls, parking and the driver's bata are included.
Is Kodaikanal road difficult to drive?
It is not dangerous, but it is tiring. Via Palani, the last 50 km or so is ghat road with hairpin bends. The alternative from Kochi, via Munnar and Theni, is about 280 km but includes 80 to 90 km of ghat between Adimali and Bodinayakanur before you even reach the Kodaikanal climb; it is the prettier drive and the more exhausting one. Our view: for a first trip, take the Palani route and save Munnar for its own weekend, using our Kochi to Munnar guide.
- Start early, so the ghat section is in daylight.
- Use low gear on the descent rather than riding the brakes.
- Expect mist on the upper stretch; Kodaikanal sits at about 7,000 feet.
E-pass and plastic rules
In 2024 the Madras High Court ordered e-passes for vehicles entering Kodaikanal, issued through the Tamil Nadu ePass portal, and in March 2025 it capped private vehicles at 4,000 a day on weekdays and 6,000 at weekends as an interim summer measure, with tourists on public transport exempt. The rules have been revised more than once, so check the portal before you drive. Plastic water bottles under 5 litres are banned in Kodaikanal, and a Rs 20-per-bottle fine (green tax) has applied since 22 September 2024; vehicles are checked at the entry points.
Tamil Nadu Tourism names April to June as the best time to visit. For other hill trips across the border, see our Kochi to Ooty guide.
