Kerala Kalamandalam at Cheruthuruthy runs guided campus tours from 9:30 am to 1 pm on working days, and as of October 2026 its own site lists the fee at Rs 30 for Indian visitors and Rs 10 for school students. It is about 111 km from Kochi by road on Rome2Rio's figure, or 104 km by rail to Shoranur Junction, the nearest station. That makes it a comfortable day trip, as long as you are at the gate by 9:15.

What is Kerala Kalamandalam?

It is the state's best-known school for the classical performing arts, founded in 1930 by the poet Vallathol Narayana Menon, and it sits on the banks of the Nila, also called the Bharathapuzha, in Thrissur district. Students train in Kathakali, Kutiyattam, Mohiniyattam, Thullal, Nangiarkoothu, percussion and vocal music. Kerala Tourism notes that classes begin at 4:30 in the morning, which tells you how seriously the place takes itself. That is the point of going: you are watching training, not a show put on for tourists.

What do you see on the tour?

A guide meets visitors at the entrance to the campus at Vallathol Nagar. According to Kalamandalam's guided tour page, the stops include:

  • The Koothambalam, a temple-style theatre whose granite pillars carry carvings of the 108 karanas, the classical dance poses
  • The kalaris, the classrooms for dance, Kathakali music, percussion and vocal training
  • The art gallery, opened in 2001, with figures in Kathakali, Kutiyattam, Mohiniyattam and Thullal costume
  • The Vallathol Museum at Cheruthuruthy, in the house the poet rented

Footwear is not allowed inside the kalaris, so wear sandals you can slip off quickly. Ordinary photography is free; professional photographers need permission and may be charged.

How much does it cost to visit Kalamandalam?

The figures below are from Kalamandalam's tourism page as of October 2026. It says the fees include applicable taxes.

TicketFee per head
Indian visitorsRs 30
School studentsRs 10
A Day with the MastersRs 2,000

A Day with the Masters, started with Kerala Tourism in 2003, adds an audio-visual film on Kalamandalam's history, a talk on Kerala mural painting and a look at the old campus by the Nila. At Rs 30 the regular tour is one of the best-value mornings in central Kerala, and we would start there. The tourism page caps bookings at 30 people a day in groups of 10, so fill in the visit request form linked on kalamandalam.ac.in or call +91 4884 262418 before you set off.

How to reach Kalamandalam from Kochi?

OptionDetails (as of October 2026)
TrainShoranur Junction is 104 km from Ernakulam Junction by rail, with erail listing a second-sitting fare of Rs 65. The 06:00 Ernakulam to Kannur Express (16305) is listed reaching Shoranur at 08:07. Kerala Tourism puts the campus about 3 km from the station.
CarAbout 111 km, which Rome2Rio estimates at 1 hour 41 minutes. We would not plan on that for a weekday morning through Thrissur.

The 06:00 train is the stress-free choice: it gives you more than an hour of slack before the 9:30 start. If you drive, you can fold in a stop on the way back; our Guruvayur day trip guide covers another temple town in the same district, and our Kochi to Thrissur comparison breaks down the first half of the journey.

When is Kalamandalam closed to visitors?

Do not just turn up. Kalamandalam's tourism page lists these closures:

  • Government holidays and other declared holidays
  • From the third week of March, for exams and the summer break, with no tours in April and May; bookings reopen in June
  • About 10 days around Onam and 10 days in December for Christmas

The best months to go are June to February, outside those breaks. For more ideas like this, see our Things To Do section.
