Marari Beach From Kochi: How to Get There and Is It Worth It
Marari Beach is about 41 km from Kochi, with its own railway station. How to get there by car or train, and who will love or hate it.
Marari Beach is about 41 km from central Kochi by road, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by car via the Alappuzha-Arthunkal-Kochi road according to Google Maps in October 2026, and it also has its own railway station, Mararikulam, on the Ernakulam-Alappuzha coastal line. It is a long, quiet beach beside a working fishing village, about 11 km from Alappuzha town, with no water sports and no beach shacks. If that sounds like a selling point, go. If it sounds dull, pick somewhere else.

How far is Marari Beach from Kochi?
From the centre of Kochi, Google Maps gave 41.1 km and about 1 hour 10 minutes by car when we checked in October 2026. One travel guide gives a similar figure of about 40 km, and warns that traffic can add around 30 minutes. Cochin International Airport is much further: Kerala Tourism puts it at about 75 km. Mararikulam village is in Alappuzha district, and National Highway 66 passes through S.L. Puram, about 5 km east of the village.
How to reach Marari Beach?
| Option | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Car or taxi | About 41 km and 1 hour 10 minutes from central Kochi without heavy traffic | Families, early starts, flexible return |
| Train | Mararikulam station (code MAKM) on the Ernakulam-Alappuzha coastal line, then an auto to the beach | Solo travellers and couples on a budget |
The train is the interesting option. Mararikulam is a minor station where only a few trains have scheduled stops, so check before you go. On ixigo in October 2026, the 16341 Guruvayur-Thiruvananthapuram Express was listed leaving Ernakulam Junction at 05:20 and reaching Mararikulam at 06:12, and the 13351 Dhanbad-Alappuzha Express was listed leaving Ernakulam at 12:40 and reaching Mararikulam at 13:59. Timetables change, so confirm on the NTES app or the IRCTC site on the day. Unsure which Ernakulam station to start from? Is Marari Beach worth visiting?
Yes, if you want to sit, walk and do very little. Kerala Tourism's own description is frank about what is missing: you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas, but there are no water sports or beach shacks. What you get instead:
- long walks on a palm-lined beach that the fishing village still works from;
- a look at village life, on foot or by bicycle, in Mararikulam behind the beach;
- the chance of a boat ride, since Kerala Tourism notes local fishermen may take visitors out if they judge it safe;
- Ayurveda treatments, which Kerala Tourism lists among things to do here.
Kerala Tourism names December to March as the best time to visit, when the beach and its surroundings are mostly dry. It is warm and humid all year round. We could not find any official information about lifeguards at Marari, so treat it as a beach for walking and sitting rather than swimming.
Be honest with yourself about food. This is not a strip with cafes every fifty metres. Carry water and plan to eat in Alappuzha town, or at your resort if you are staying over.
Which is better, Marari Beach or Alleppey beach?
They suit different days. Marari is the one for quiet. Alappuzha beach is better if you want to combine the sea with the town, its lighthouse and a backwater cruise, all of which Kerala Tourism lists as nearby options from Marari. Our pick for a single day out from Kochi: a morning at Marari while the light is soft, then about 11 km on to Alappuzha for lunch and the afternoon.
