Boulders in a wide forest-lined river in Kerala under a clear morning sky

Paniyeli Poru is a rocky stretch of the Periyar about 20 km from Perumbavoor and 35 km from Aluva, with entry from 8 am to 4 pm. Kerala Tourism lists entry at Rs 20 for adults and Rs 10 for children aged 5 to 13, and Kerala Tourism names mid-November to the end of May as the best time, when the water drops and the rocks show. It is a beautiful place and a dangerous one, and you should go knowing both.

The fee on the ground can differ from the listing, so carry some cash. Kerala Tourism lists a contact number, 8547604200, and it is worth calling before you set out, because access depends on weather and water levels.

Where is Paniyeli Poru waterfall located?

It sits on the Periyar between Malayattoor and Paniyeli, in an area controlled by the Kerala Forest Department. From Kochi, take the Aluva-Munnar road to Kuruppampady and turn off towards Paniyeli; Wikivoyage puts it about 55 km from Kochi. Buses run from Perumbavoor to Paniyeli in about an hour, and from the Paniyeli stop you walk at least 1 km to the river. The last stretch of road is rough, so walking the final few hundred metres is often easier than looking for parking.

The "waterfall" is a short trek, not a roadside view. Kerala Tourism describes a 1.5 km riverside path: about 400 m in you cross the river on foot to reach the forest, and the path runs 1.5 km in all. It calls the trek easy when the water is low, and that condition is the whole point.

What are the timings for visiting Paniyeli Poru in Perumbavoor?

Entry is from 8 am to 4 pm, and Wikivoyage notes the site closes to visitors at 5 pm. Go early: the light is better, and you are not rushing the walk back before closing.

Is there water in Paniyeli Poru?

Yes, and that is the problem. Even when the water is low and the rocks are exposed, Kerala Tourism notes the whirlpools that sit between them. Wikipedia puts the toll at nearly 89 deaths in two decades, most blamed on undercurrents; Wikivoyage gives a higher figure of about 150 in a decade. Warning boards are up and guards from the local Vana Samrakshana Samithi are posted there, but Wikivoyage says there is no organised rescue system, and the nearest fire and rescue station is 20 km away in Perumbavoor.

  • Do not swim or bathe, however calm the surface looks.
  • Stay off wet rocks; they are slippery and the drop into deep water is sudden.
  • Outside mid-November to May the water is higher and the crossing harder, so call ahead before going then.
  • Alcohol is banned and the site is a no-plastic zone.

Our view: if you are bringing children or a group that likes to show off, choose somewhere else. If you are going to sit on the bank, walk the path and look, it is one of the prettiest stretches of the Periyar within reach of Kochi.

What is the history of Paniyeli Poru?

"Poru" means fight in Malayalam. According to Kerala Tourism, the name comes from the raftsmen who once floated bamboo down the Periyar to Malayattoor and other places, and had to battle the rough water here to get through.

Paniyeli Poru is its own day out rather than an add-on. Our Bhoothathankettu guide covers another Periyar outing on a different road, and Thattekad suits anyone who came for the forest and the birds. Plenty more outings like it sit in Things To Do.
