Which AI Should You Actually Pay For? A No-Hype Kochi Guide

Every phone in Kochi seems to have at least one AI chat app on it now, and most people did not pick theirs on purpose: it came pre-installed, or a cousin forwarded a link, or a Jio recharge unlocked something nobody explained. 2026 is the year the free ride starts ending in places, and the three names that actually matter for a Kochi household (ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Claude) now have real India pricing attached to them. Here is what each one costs, what it is actually good for, and where the marketing glosses over something that matters.

How much does each one cost in India right now?

All three have rewritten their India pricing in the last year, and the numbers are worth writing down before the introductory offers move on.

Claude only got India-specific rupee pricing in July 2026, years after it became a genuine alternative to the other two. Anthropic says India is its second-largest market after the United States, at close to 6 percent of global usage, which is presumably why local pricing finally showed up. One thing it still lacks: UPI. You pay by card or through Apple's or Google's app store billing, full stop. For a country that runs on UPI for everything from tea to television EMIs, that is a real friction point, not a footnote.

Does any of them actually speak Malayalam?

Of the three, Gemini is the one with a confirmed, named Malayalam rollout. Google has put Malayalam into Gemini Live voice conversations and, as of a March 2026 expansion, into the Gemini panel built into Chrome, alongside Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati and Marathi. That is genuinely useful for a grandparent in Kaloor who wants to ask a question out loud rather than type in English. We could not confirm an equivalent dedicated Malayalam mode for ChatGPT or Claude: both read and reply in Malayalam text reasonably well if you type to them in it, but neither has announced the kind of named regional-language voice feature Google has.

Which one should you actually use?

• A student prepping for exams: Gemini's free tier is generous enough for explanations and practice questions, and if your family is on an eligible Jio 5G plan, the free 18-month Pro unlock is hard to beat for the price.
• Someone running a small shop or business in Kakkanad or Edappally: ChatGPT Go at Rs 399 (free right now) is the most practical for drafting messages, price lists and simple spreadsheets - and if the business doesn't have a page yet, it is worth listing it on Haila Kochi's Business Directory while you're at it.

• An older relative who wants to talk rather than type: Gemini's voice mode and its Malayalam support make it the least intimidating starting point.

The catch nobody mentions

This generosity is temporary by design. ChatGPT Go's free run in India is a 12-month promotional window, and OpenAI has not committed to a firm end date beyond that. Once it lapses, Rs 399 a month lands on your card unless you cancel. Google's introductory Rs 199 rate for AI Plus doubles to Rs 399 after six months for the same reason. None of these companies are losing money to be nice; they are buying habit before the free window closes, the way OTT platforms did. Set a reminder for whenever your free period ends.

A genuine word of caution, not a marketing point: do not hand any of these tools your child's exam answers to write outright, a scanned Aadhaar card, or a bank statement to "summarise." Kerala has already put AI into the school curriculum for years 7 to 10, and the same caution about not outsourcing your own thinking applies just as much to adults handling their own documents. None of the three is "best." Gemini wins on price and Malayalam access, ChatGPT wins on everyday usefulness for small business, and Claude wins on serious writing and code once you accept paying full price for it. Pick based on what you will use this month, not which one has the loudest ad.
