How to Check Your CIBIL Score for Free, and Fix Errors in Your Report
Each of India's four credit bureaus must give you one free full report with your score every calendar year. How to get it and dispute mistakes.
You can get your full credit report, with the score, free once every calendar year from each of India's four credit bureaus: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. The RBI has required this since 1 January 2017. On cibil.com, you sign up (or log in and use the "Get your Free Report" link under My Account), verify your identity, and the report includes the score on a 300 to 900 scale.

How do I check my actual credit score for free?
Go to the bureau directly. A Reserve Bank directive from September 2016 tells every credit information company to give individuals a free full credit report, including the score, once in a calendar year, January to December, in electronic form, after verifying who you are. Each bureau must publish how to get it on its own website.
| Bureau | What you get free | When it resets |
|---|---|---|
| TransUnion CIBIL | One full score and report a year | 1 January |
| Experian | One full report with score a year | 1 January |
| Equifax | One full report with score a year | 1 January |
| CRIF High Mark | One full report with score a year | 1 January |
That is four free reports a year if you use all four. Pulling more than one before a big loan gives you a fuller picture. On CIBIL, existing members find the free report under My Account; if the link is missing, you have usually already used it for the year. If online identity verification fails, CIBIL says you will need to call its customer support to complete it.
Our tip: skip the paid "unlimited" plans unless you are actively fixing a problem. One free look a year is enough for most people, and if you are planning a home loan, use a second bureau's free report a few months before you apply.
Can I check my CIBIL score with Aadhaar?
PAN is the identifier almost every guide and lender uses, and it is the one to have ready; the bureau report itself lists ID numbers such as PAN, passport and voter ID. CRIF High Mark has said bureau websites accept details like PAN or Aadhaar along with your date of birth and address. Either way, keep your PAN at hand before you start.
Is 773 a good CIBIL score?
Yes. CIBIL's score runs from 300 to 900, and CIBIL itself says a score above 700 is generally considered good. A 773 puts you comfortably in that range. What a lender actually offers you also depends on income, existing EMIs and the loan itself, so treat the score as the door, not the deal. If you are about to buy a flat, the score matters more than most first-time buyers expect; our guide to what it costs to register a flat in Kochi covers the rest of the bill.
What if the report is wrong?
Checking is how you catch mistakes such as a closed loan still showing as open, a card that is not yours, or an old address. Raise a dispute online from the report itself.
- Raise it: CIBIL's online dispute form lets you challenge personal, contact, employment, account and enquiry details in a single dispute.
- Wait: the item is marked "Under Dispute", and CIBIL says resolution may take approximately 30 days, depending on how fast the bank or lender responds.
- Claim compensation if it drags: under RBI rules issued in October 2023, if a complaint is not resolved within 30 calendar days, the lender or bureau responsible owes you Rs 100 for every extra calendar day. Lenders must send corrected data to the bureau within 21 calendar days of being told.
- Escalate: if compensation is wrongly refused, you can go to the RBI Ombudsman under the Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021.
Our advice: mention the Rs 100 a day rule in writing when you complain, so the clock is on record.
Who else is looking at your report?
RBI rules now require the bureaus to send you an SMS or email alert when a lender pulls your credit report and the enquiry shows up on it, provided your mobile number or email is on file. If you get one of those alerts and you have not applied for anything, treat it as a warning: someone may be applying for credit in your name. Pull your free report at once and dispute anything you do not recognise. If money has already gone, call 1930.
