Kochi to Mumbai: Train vs Flight, and Which One to Pick
Nonstop flights take about 2 hours; the daily Netravati takes 27h 50m from Ernakulam to LTT. Which trains really reach Mumbai, fares and our pick.
A nonstop Kochi to Mumbai flight takes about 2 hours, and five airlines fly the route. The train takes most of a day and a half: the daily Netravati Express leaves Ernakulam Junction at 13:15 and reaches Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla at 17:05 the next day, 27 hours 50 minutes later. Fly if your time is worth anything; take the train for the Konkan coast, a tight budget, or heavy luggage.

How long is the flight from Kochi to Mumbai?
About two hours in the air. On a sample day at the end of October 2026, we counted at least 11 nonstop departures from Cochin to Mumbai across Air India, Air India Express, Akasa Air, IndiGo and SpiceJet, with scheduled times between 1 hour 55 minutes and 2 hours 15 minutes. Departures run from just after midnight to nearly midnight, which is the real advantage: you can choose a flight around your day rather than your day around a train. Airline line-ups change by season, so check on the day you book. If you are flying, our Cochin Terminal 1 vs Terminal 3 guide tells you which building you need.
Which trains actually go into Mumbai?
This is where most people get caught. Search "Ernakulam to Mumbai" on a booking app and you will get a long list, but many of those trains are heading to Delhi, Gujarat or Punjab and only touch the edge of the Mumbai region, at Panvel, Kalyan or Vasai Road. Those stations are a long way from South Mumbai or the western suburbs. Check the arrival station before you book, not just the train name.
The main trains that terminate in Mumbai proper at LTT, Kurla, include:
- Netravati Express (16346): daily. Ernakulam Junction 13:15, LTT 17:05 next day. It started its run in Thiruvananthapuram and, in 1998, was the first scheduled train to run the full length of the Konkan Railway.
- Ernakulam to LTT Duronto (12224): not daily. Ernakulam Junction 21:30, LTT 19:00 next day, about 21 hours 30 minutes, with stops at Kozhikode, Mangaluru, Madgaon, Ratnagiri and Panvel. It is the fastest option to LTT but check its running days for your date.
- Thiruvananthapuram North to LTT Superfast (22114): not daily. Ernakulam Town 05:10, LTT 04:00 next day, about 22 hours 50 minutes.
- Garib Rath (12202): not daily, from Ernakulam Town, AC 3-tier and chair car only, reaching LTT in a little under 23 hours.
The daily Mangala Lakshadweep Express (12617) also leaves Ernakulam Junction at 13:25, but it goes on to Delhi; for Mumbai it gets you to Kalyan, not into the city. Note which Ernakulam station your train uses; our Junction vs Town explainer helps.
How much does a train ticket from Kerala to Mumbai cost?
On the Netravati from Ernakulam Junction to LTT, as of October 2026, the adult fare is Rs 695 in sleeper, Rs 1,790 in AC 3-tier and Rs 2,570 in AC 2-tier, before payment gateway charges. Tatkal costs more, and premium trains like the Duronto are priced differently, so confirm the exact fare on IRCTC. Flight fares swing with the date and how early you book, so compare on the day.
Our verdict for Mumbai
The flight, almost every time. Losing a full day and a night to the Netravati only makes sense if you want it to. And some people genuinely should: the Konkan stretch through Karnataka, Goa and coastal Maharashtra, with its tunnels, viaducts and river crossings, is, in our view, one of the best train rides in the country, and greenest just after the monsoon. If you go that way, book AC 3-tier and a window side berth, and treat it as part of the trip. If you only care about getting to Mumbai, fly.
