Kochi to Hyderabad: Train vs Flight, and Which One to Pick
Nonstop flights take about 1h 35m; the daily Sabari Superfast takes just over 24 hours from Ernakulam Town. Times, fares and our pick.
Fly. A nonstop Kochi to Hyderabad flight takes about 1 hour 35 minutes, while the fastest daily train, the Sabari Superfast (20630), leaves Ernakulam Town at 10:45 and reaches Secunderabad at 11:02 the next morning, a little over 24 hours later. The train only wins if you are travelling on a tight budget, carrying a lot of luggage, or stopping somewhere in Andhra Pradesh on the way.

Train vs flight at a glance
| Flight (COK to HYD) | Sabari Superfast (ERN to SC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Time in transit | About 1h 30m to 1h 40m | About 24h 17m |
| How often | Several nonstops a day | Daily, one departure |
| Leaves from | Cochin airport, Nedumbassery | Ernakulam Town |
| Arrives at | Shamshabad, about 24 km south of Hyderabad | Secunderabad Junction, in the city |
| Cost | Usually several times the train fare; rises sharply close to the date | Sleeper from roughly Rs 550, AC 3-tier roughly Rs 1,500 (base fare, as of October 2026) |
Fares are the part that moves. The train figures above come from the standard Mail/Express fare table for this distance and do not include the superfast surcharge or reservation charges, so expect the ticket to be a little higher. Check IRCTC for the exact amount on your date.
How do the Kochi to Hyderabad flights work?
When we checked the schedule for late October 2026, every nonstop on the route was an IndiGo flight, five a day, spread from an 08:30 departure to a 19:50 one. Air India and Air India Express options on the same search all involved a stop. Schedules change each season, so treat that as a snapshot rather than a timetable.
The thing people forget is the ground time at both ends. Cochin airport is a drive out to Nedumbassery, and Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport sits at Shamshabad, roughly 24 km south of the city, with no metro link. Add both drives and the time at the airport to the flight, and the door-to-door trip is a good deal longer than an hour and a half. It is still a fraction of the train. If you are deciding between terminals at the Kochi end, our Terminal 1 vs Terminal 3 guide covers which one domestic flights use.
Which trains run from Kochi to Hyderabad?
- Sabari Superfast (20630): daily, Ernakulam Town 10:45, Secunderabad 11:02 next day. It runs from Thiruvananthapuram, also stops at Aluva and Thrissur, and was upgraded to superfast in September 2025. It has sleeper, AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier and AC first class.
- A weekly Amrit Bharat (17042): leaves Ernakulam Town on Wednesday evenings and terminates at Charlapalli, a newer terminal on Hyderabad's eastern outskirts rather than Secunderabad Junction, after about 25 hours 45 minutes. It is a non-AC train.
- Special trains: seasonal specials appear on this route from time to time, but they come and go, so check before you plan around one.
Note that the Sabari leaves from Ernakulam Town, not Ernakulam Junction. Not sure which station is closer to you? See our Junction vs Town explainer.
Is there a Vande Bharat train from Hyderabad to Kerala?
Not when we checked in October 2026. We found no Vande Bharat service, sleeper or chair car, running between Kerala and Hyderabad. Reports of Vande Bharat sleepers for Kerala have pointed at a Thiruvananthapuram to Mangaluru route, and Secunderabad's at Pune, not at a Kerala to Hyderabad link. Until that changes, the Sabari is the practical daily train.
What is the distance between Cochin and Hyderabad by air?
About 813 km in a straight line between the two airports. By rail the Sabari covers roughly 1,335 km from Ernakulam Town to Secunderabad, which is why the train takes so long: it swings through Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh rather than taking anything like a direct line.
Which one we would pick
For almost everyone, the flight. A day and a night on the Sabari is a long time to give up for a trip you could finish by lunch, and the 10:45 departure means the train eats both a working day and a night. The train makes sense for students and families watching every rupee, for anyone moving with heavy bags, or for people who actually want to stop in Tirupati or Guntur on the way. If you do take it, book AC 3-tier rather than sleeper; 24 hours is too long for a sleeper berth in the heat.
