If you actually want to attempt a full 42.2 km marathon, the Navy race will not get you there. Its longest category is the 21.1 km half marathon. The Federal Bank Kochi Marathon is the only one of the two offering a full marathon distance, alongside a half marathon, 10 km and a 3 km Green Run for beginners or families. If a half marathon or shorter is genuinely your target, both races cover it, and the choice comes down to season and route rather than distance.

How do the routes and race-day logistics compare?

The Navy half marathon runs on fully closed roads across the International Container Terminal Road, starting at the Grand Hyatt Convention Center and finishing at Bolgatty Palace Ground, with the backwaters in view for most of the distance. It is organised by the Southern Naval Command and is World Athletics certified, like the Federal Bank Kochi Marathon, and its fully closed-road course tends to mean tighter road management on race day. The Federal Bank Kochi Marathon's route also runs along Kerala's backwaters, with bib distribution held in advance at Marine Drive Ground, and early flag-off times, the full marathon has historically started around 4 AM, to beat the daytime heat over a much longer distance.

The Navy half marathon's fees are published with an early-bird structure: as of its 2026 edition, the half marathon costs Rs 1,200 with the early discount against a regular price of Rs 1,600, the 10 km run Rs 900 against Rs 1,200, and the 5 km fun run Rs 600 against Rs 800, and it explicitly does not accept spot registrations on race day. So which one should you actually run?

Run the Navy half marathon in December if a fully closed-road course and race-day extras like breakfast and a finisher medal built into a fixed fee matter more to you than distance options. Run the Federal Bank Kochi Marathon in February if you are training for a full marathon specifically, since it is the only one of the two that offers the distance, or if you want a lower-pressure 3 km or 10 km entry point into road running as a family. Neither is a substitute for the other. They sit on opposite ends of the calendar, February and December, and exist for different runners.
