IIM Kozhikode Opens a Kochi Campus, Right Beside the Metro

The stretch between Kalamassery and CUSAT is not where anyone would have gone looking for a business school ten years ago. It is a working part of Kochi: industrial estates, engineering colleges, workshops, the metro viaduct running overhead on concrete legs. As of this July it also has an Indian Institute of Management campus, and the address was not an accident.

IIM Kozhikode opened its new Kochi campus at Kalamassery in July 2026, on a site directly beside the Cochin University metro station. Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, the institute's director, led the opening, with Loknath Behera, managing director of Kochi Metro Rail Limited, present as guest of honour. A campus you can reach without owning a car

Management education in India has traditionally been built on a residential campus model, usually on cheap land some distance out of town, where students live on site for two years and the city is a weekend trip. IIM Kozhikode's main campus follows that pattern, spread across the hills outside Kozhikode.

The Kochi campus deliberately does not. It sits on the Blue Line, which means a working professional in Kakkanad, Edappally or Palarivattom can finish a day at the office and be in a classroom without touching a steering wheel or negotiating the evening crawl on the NH bypass. The location also puts it within reach of the national highway network and the city's main transport hubs, which matters for executive students travelling in from elsewhere in Kerala.

This is a significant thing for the city. Kochi has spent years building transit that changes what is possible to schedule in a weekday evening, and an institution choosing its plot on that basis is the first real proof the argument works on people who are not planners.

What programmes does the IIM Kochi campus offer?

The campus opens with two of the institute's flagship programmes. The first is the Bachelor of Management Studies, an undergraduate route into management that skips the usual detour through an unrelated degree. The second is the Executive Post Graduate Programme, aimed squarely at people already several years into a career who want the qualification without leaving the job.

That second one is the more interesting fit for Kochi. The city has a large and growing population of mid career professionals in IT services, logistics, healthcare and finance who have historically had to look at Bengaluru or a distance learning programme for an executive credential. Having one on the metro line removes a specific, concrete barrier.

The Gurukula room

The design detail the institute has chosen to lead with is a dedicated Gurukula urban learning space, built for dialogue based, collaborative learning rather than conventional teacher centred instruction. The framing draws a line from older Indian learning traditions to a room full of working adults arguing about a case study, which is either a genuinely thoughtful piece of design or good branding, and there is no reason it cannot be both.

Around it sits the expected infrastructure of a new campus built this decade: technology enabled smart classrooms, digital teaching systems, collaborative learning spaces, a modern library, a cafeteria, and areas designed for students to run into each other outside class. For an urban campus where nobody lives on site, those informal spaces do a lot of the real work.

How long has IIM Kozhikode been in Kochi?

This is not IIM Kozhikode's first move into the city. The institute has run a satellite campus at Infopark, Kakkanad since 2012, so the Kalamassery building is the consolidation of a presence that has been growing in Kochi for well over a decade. It arrives in the institute's thirtieth year, which explains some of the ceremony around the opening.

Kakkanad, meanwhile, keeps expanding around it. Infopark is working through its next phase of development, and the surrounding ecosystem of coworking spaces and independent studios has thickened considerably in the last few years. A business school with a permanent building in the middle of that is a different proposition from one running classes out of a leased floor.

What it signals

Cities acquire institutions slowly and then all at once. Kochi already has the port, the airport, the metro, an IT corridor and an art biennale that put it on international itineraries. What it has not consistently had is a reason for its own best graduates to stay rather than take the first flight to Bengaluru.

A single campus does not fix that on its own. But an IIM building, on a metro station, running an executive programme aimed at people mid career, is aimed precisely at the group the city most needs to keep.
