Fourteen islands 15 km from Kochi, reached via Varapuzha. Best October to March, late afternoon. Pokkali fields, toddy shops, and honest caveats.

Kadamakkudy is a cluster of 14 islands about 15 km from Kochi, reached by road via Varapuzha, and the best time to go is October to March, ideally in the late afternoon. There is no ticket, no attraction and no promenade: you come for flat green pokkali fields, prawn ponds, backwater views and a toddy-shop meal, and if you expect more than that you will leave wondering what the fuss was about.

How to reach Kadamakkudy from Kochi?

By road, through Varapuzha. Incredible India's listing suggests a bus from Ernakulam to Varapuzha and an auto-rickshaw from there, or a taxi straight from Kochi. A cab is the easier choice, but a local travel blog, Tapioca, warns that the island roads are narrow concrete embankments, too tight for comfortable car touring, and that finding a ride back from the deeper islands can be hard. So either keep your cab waiting or plan to explore on foot or by bicycle from one point.

The same blog describes a jhankar, a small vehicle ferry, linking Pizhala and Kadamakkudy, which takes only a couple of cars at a time and can mean a wait on weekends. Check the return crossing before you go across.

Kochi Water Metro terminals at Kadamakkudy and Paliyamthuruthu were largely built by early 2026, but the launch slipped from April to a June 2026 target, and we could find no confirmation that the service has started. Until it is running, treat it as a future option and check the Water Metro's own announcements. How the network works is covered in our Water Metro vs ferry guide.

What is the best time to visit Kadamakkudy?

October to March, according to both Incredible India and Kerala Tourism, when the weather is gentler. For birds, Tapioca narrows it to October to February. Within a day, go late. Tapioca recommends roughly 4:30 to 6:30 pm and calls the 11 am to 3 pm window intensely uncomfortable, which matches what you would expect from shadeless paddy flats.

The monsoon is a different, greener Kadamakkudy. Kerala Tourism notes it is the season for pokkali cultivation, so it is worth seeing once, though Tapioca warns the paths get very muddy and slippery.

What is there to do?

  • Look at the fields, properly. Pokkali is a rice with tall stalks that rise above floodwater, and Tapioca describes it as saline-tolerant; Kerala Tourism says the name comes from the Malayalam "pokkam", meaning height. After the harvest, tidal water returns to the fields for traditional prawn farming, a rotation that has run for centuries.
  • Birdwatch. Kerala Tourism lists egrets, herons, kingfishers and cormorants.
  • Walk or cycle the embankment roads between islands.
  • Eat at a toddy shop. Tapioca mentions pearl spot fry, clam meat, and tapioca with fish curry, served in basic surroundings. Our toddy shop food guide explains what to order.

Two rules worth following: do not walk into private prawn or fish farms without permission, and wear proper footwear on the embankments.

Is Kadamakkudy worth visiting?

Yes, for the right person. The islands got a burst of national attention after Anand Mahindra praised them on X and then visited in December 2025, and that has set some expectations the place cannot meet. Tapioca also notes plastic bottles along the high-tide lines of the riverbanks. What it does offer, a couple of slow hours of open water and green fields 15 km from the city, is genuinely hard to find this close to Kochi. Go for sunset, eat well, and do not over-plan.
