Kochi Airport vs Kannur Airport: Which One Should You Actually Fly Into

Cochin International Airport (CIAL) handled 1,14,42,583 passengers in the 2025-26 financial year, more than seven times Kannur International Airport's 14,34,168 passengers over the same period (more on that record year in our CIAL passenger-traffic piece). Both airports are real options for a Kerala trip, but they serve different halves of the state, and the right one depends entirely on where you are actually going.

How far apart are Kochi and Kannur airports?

The two airports are about 216 km apart as the crow flies, and roughly 250 to 290 km by road depending on the route, a drive of roughly 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic through Kozhikode. A direct flight between them takes about an hour. CIAL itself opened on 25 May 1999 as India's first airport built under a public-private partnership, funded in part by around 10,000 non-resident Indians, and it is now known separately as the world's first fully solar-powered airport (see our explainer on how that works). Kannur, by contrast, is Kerala's newest and fourth international airport, opened on 9 December 2018. In practice almost nobody flies the short hop between the two; the distance matters because it tells you how much extra road travel you are signing up for if you land at the wrong one for your actual destination.

Which destinations does each airport actually serve?

• CIAL (Kochi) is the natural arrival point for Kochi itself, and for Munnar, Alappuzha, Kumarakom and Thekkady, all within a few hours' drive south and east of the airport.
• Kannur International Airport is built for North Malabar: Kannur city, the beaches around Bekal, Kasaragod, and northern Wayanad via road.

If your trip is entirely inside central or south Kerala, CIAL is not really a choice, it is the only sensible one. If you are headed to North Kerala specifically, flying into Kannur can save you the better part of a day compared to landing in Kochi and driving north. One caveat worth knowing: for most of Wayanad's tourist belt, Calicut (Kozhikode) International Airport, roughly 85 km away, is actually the shorter drive; Kannur is the better call mainly for the northern half of the district and for Kasaragod.

Which international routes fly out of each one?

CIAL runs a large, long-established international network, with international traffic (54,01,939 passengers in FY 2025-26) nearly matching its domestic numbers (60,40,644). Kannur's international side is smaller but growing fast: international passengers rose to about 10.51 lakh in calendar year 2025, up 15 percent over 2024, and now make up roughly two-thirds of the airport's total traffic. Its routes lean heavily toward the Gulf: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Doha, Muscat, Kuwait, Bahrain and Riyadh, serving the large expatriate workforce from North Malabar rather than general tourist traffic.

So which airport should you actually pick?
