How to File a Pothole or Streetlight Complaint With Kochi Corporation
The exact online form, phone number and ward lookup for reporting potholes, dead streetlights and uncollected garbage in Kochi.
Kochi Corporation runs its complaints through a single Public Grievance Cell, reachable online through the Corporation's own site or the state's newer KSMART portal, or by phone at 0484-2369007, and every complaint needs your ward number to go anywhere. Here is what actually happens when you report a pothole, a dead streetlight, or garbage that hasn't been collected.
- How do you find your ward number?
- How do you file a complaint online?
- What if you'd rather call or walk in?
- What kinds of issues actually go to the Corporation?
- What if nothing happens?
How do you find your ward number?
Every complaint form asks for your ward, and Kochi has had 76 of them since a 2025 delimitation replaced the older 74-ward map, so do not assume your old ward number still applies if you last checked years ago. If you don't know yours, the Corporation's own ward-details page lists all of them by name and area, or you can check the voters' list on the Kerala State Election Commission's portal, which maps addresses to wards for election purposes and works just as well here. One catch worth knowing before you file: the online complaint form's own ward dropdown hadn't caught up with the 2025 delimitation as of this writing and still lists the old 74 wards in Malayalam, so match your area to the closest listed ward name if your exact new ward isn't there yet.
How do you file a complaint online?
The Public Grievance Cell form sits on the Corporation's own site rather than a separate app, and is also reachable through the state's KSMART portal, which replaced the older citizen services portal in April 2025. You'll need to fill in:
- Your ward number
- A complaint category (the dropdown covers the usual civic categories)
- The exact location of the problem
- A written description of what's wrong
- Your name, address, phone number and email, so the Corporation can follow up
There's no shortcut around the ward number, so look it up first rather than guessing; a complaint logged against the wrong ward is more likely to sit unread than get redirected to the right desk.
What if you'd rather call or walk in?
The Corporation still takes complaints the old-fashioned way. You can call the main office directly on 0484-2369007, or go in person to the headquarters near Marine Drive, Ernakulam North, which also handles birth certificates, trade licenses and property tax queries at the same counters. For anything urgent, like a fallen tree blocking a road or a live wire down after a storm, calling is faster than waiting for an online form to be processed, since it gets logged with a human on the line rather than sitting in a queue.
What kinds of issues actually go to the Corporation?
Not everything broken in Kochi is the Corporation's problem, and sending the wrong department a complaint just wastes your own time. As a rough guide:
| Report to the Corporation | Report elsewhere |
|---|---|
| Potholes and road damage inside the city | State highways: Kerala PWD |
| Garbage not collected, sewage issues | Water supply faults: Kerala Water Authority |
| Streetlights out | Power cuts: KSEB |
| Property tax, trade licenses, birth/death certificates | Metro station issues: Kochi Metro Rail |
| Encroachments, unauthorised construction | Master-plan or big public-realm projects: GCDA |
What if nothing happens?
If a complaint sits unresolved, you are not stuck simply re-filing the same form and hoping. Kerala's local self-government system has a formal escalation path: unresolved municipal grievances can be taken to the Chief Minister's Public Grievance Redressal Cell (CMPGRC). It's a slower route and genuinely meant as a last resort rather than a first move, since it pulls the complaint out of the local office entirely, but it exists precisely for the pothole that's been reported three times and photographed twice with nothing to show for it. Keep your complaint reference number from the online form; you'll need it if you ever have to go that far.
