Applying for a Passport in Kochi: What It Costs Now, and Where to Go

Kerala is issued more passports per head than any other state in India, roughly 44 for every 1,000 people in 2023. That is what happens when a large share of your working population earns its living somewhere else. So when the fee schedule changed on 1 July 2026, it changed for a great many households in this city on the same morning.

How much does a passport cost in Kochi now?

The Ministry of External Affairs notified the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026 in June, substituting Schedule IV of the Passports Rules, 1980 under Section 24 of the Passports Act, 1967. The revised rates came into force on 1 July 2026. These are national rates, so nothing about them is particular to Kochi, but everything about them is particular to your wallet.

For comparison, the standard adult 36-page passport cost Rs 1,500 until 30 June, and the 60-page book cost Rs 2,000. That is a jump of about two thirds on the common slab. Fees had not moved since 2012, so some correction was overdue, but delivering fourteen years of it in a single morning was a rough way to go about it.

One small relief: a 10 per cent discount on the normal fee still applies to fresh applications for children up to eight years old and for senior citizens above sixty. It does not apply to re-issues, which is where most adults reading this will find themselves.

Where do you actually go?

• Passport Seva Kendra, Cochin, on the ground floor of Heera Royale, Seaport-Airport Road, Cochin Palace P.O., Karingachira, near Tripunithura. Some maps and listings label it PSK Tripunithura or PSK Ernakulam. Check the address before you set out: plenty of aggregator sites still list a Vennala address that does not match the official record.
• Passport Seva Kendra, Aluva, on the Aluva to Perumbavoor road. Often the saner choice if you live north of the city or out towards the airport side.
• Other centres under the same office at Thrissur, Kottayam and Alappuzha, plus Post Office Passport Seva Kendras including Chengannur, Kattappana, Palakkad, Nenmara and Kavaratti in Lakshadweep.
• Regional Passport Office, Cochin, where the passports are actually printed and sent out by speed post, and where escalated and complex cases from the centres are handled.

The Cochin office covers six districts, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kottayam, Idukki and Alappuzha, along with the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Officers at the regional office are available to the public on working days between 9.30 am and 1 pm.

The appointment is the hard part

Booking is done through passportindia.gov.in or the mPassport Seva app, and online payment is mandatory to secure a slot at any centre under this office. For the Cochin office, normal appointments open at 1 pm and Tatkal slots at 1.30 pm. In practice that means a daily scramble, so be logged in and waiting before the clock turns rather than opening the site at a quarter past and hoping for the best.

Tatkal deserves a plain word. It is worth the money if you have a job offer, a visa interview or a medical emergency abroad. It is not worth double the fee to spare yourself the mild inconvenience of planning ahead. Check your current passport's expiry date a good six months before you think you will need it, and normal processing is almost always enough.

What to carry to the centre

• Original proof of address and proof of date of birth, with a self-attested photocopy of each.
• Your appointment confirmation, printed or on your phone.
• Your existing passport if this is a re-issue.
• Time. Even with an appointment, write off the better part of a morning.

Police verification, where it is required, is initiated electronically once your application is granted, and that step moves at the local station's pace rather than yours. Make sure the address on your form is one where somebody can actually find you, because a missed verification is the most common way a straightforward application turns into a two-month wait.
