Having a Pet in Kochi: Vets, Rules and Where Dogs Are Actually Welcome
Kochi Corporation requires pet dogs to be registered and vaccinated, RWAs cannot legally ban them, and only a handful of cafes let dogs in.
Kochi Corporation has run a formal dog licence application process since at least 2021, when the Kerala High Court ordered six corporations, Kochi included, to register and vaccinate every pet dog in the city. If you have a dog and have not filed that form, you are not alone, and you are also not, technically, following the rule.

Do I need to register my pet dog in Kochi?
Yes, on paper. Kochi Corporation offers a dog licence application form through its official channels, a requirement that traces back to a Kerala High Court order in August 2021 directing six corporations, including Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur, to immediately register and licence pet dogs in their jurisdictions. Rabies vaccination is a prerequisite for the licence itself, which is genuinely in the interest of both your dog and your neighbours. Many government registrations in Kerala route through your nearest Akshaya centre, and it is worth asking there first if the corporation office queue puts you off. In practice, enforcement is patchy and most owners never file the paperwork. That does not make it optional. Carry proof of a recent rabies shot regardless, since it is the one document a vet, an apartment security guard or an airline will actually ask for.
Can my housing society ban my pet?
Legally, no RWA bylaw banning pets outright has held up when challenged in India, Kochi included, and courts and consumer forums have repeatedly sided with owners when housing societies tried to enforce a blanket ban. An RWA can set reasonable rules, leash your dog in the lobby and lift, clean up after it, keep barking under control, but it is on shaky legal ground if it tries to forbid pets outright, ban them from common areas as a blanket rule, or charge you an extra fee just for owning one. If your apartment bylaws claim otherwise, it is worth raising it calmly with the managing committee rather than as a legal threat on day one.
Which vets in Kochi actually handle emergencies?
| Clinic | Area | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ernakulam Pet Hospital | Palarivattom, near Renai Medicity, plus a Muvattupuzha branch | Open 24 hours, emergency and critical care |
| Felican Pet Hospital | Tripunithura, with branches including Thoppumpady and Muvattupuzha | Consultation, surgery, diagnostics, grooming, boarding |
| Pet Trust Veterinary Hospital | Ernakulam | Separate vaccination, quarantine and isolation areas, 12 plus vets on staff |
| The Cochin Pet Hospital | Kochi | Operating for over 15 years |
Save at least one 24 hour number in your phone before you need it, not after. Ernakulam Pet Hospital's Palarivattom branch is the one most owners default to at 2am, and it is worth confirming that status with a phone call rather than assuming, since hours at smaller clinics do shift.
How do Kochi's heat and monsoon affect pets?
Kerala's monsoon runs roughly June to September, and the combination of heat and humidity, not the rain itself, is what actually causes problems. Ticks, most commonly the brown dog tick, breed fastest in exactly this weather, and tick fever is one of the most common health problems vets across tropical India see in dogs. Daily tick checks during the monsoon months are not optional, particularly if you walk your dog anywhere near tall grass. Keep paws dried between the toes after every walk, since trapped moisture is what lets bacteria and fungal infections take hold in skin folds. If your dog does get tick fever, treatment usually works and dogs often improve within days, but the antibiotic course typically runs about four weeks, so do not stop early just because symptoms clear.
Where can I actually take my dog out in Kochi?
Fewer places than you would like, but a real list exists. Bobo The Wise Dragon in Fort Kochi, near the Village Office on K L Bernard Master Road, bills itself as India's first combined pet, book and cafe space, with a dedicated pet menu and grooming on site. Kashi Art Cafe has long had a pet-inclusive reputation among Fort Kochi regulars. A handful of newer cafes with open terraces, including Canvas Restaurant and Pizzeria and Fress Trees Garden Cafe, allow dogs on outdoor seating, though policies at any single cafe can change without notice, so a quick call ahead saves an awkward walk back out. For open space rather than a table, Changampuzha Park in Edappally is one of the few municipal parks where dog owners regularly walk pets, though leash rules do get enforced, so check current signage. Kochi does have one dedicated space beyond that: GCDA opened a leashed dog park at Rajendra Maidan in October 2023 with the Pawsome pet-parent community, historically running timed slots on Sunday mornings and evenings rather than staying open all day, so confirm current hours before making the trip.
