Buying Second Hand in Kochi: Books, Furniture, Phones and Bikes

Broadway is wholesale, not second hand. Real second hand Kochi runs through 7 bookshops, OLX furniture listings, and checks before buying used.

At least 6 second-hand bookshops are worth knowing in Kochi, spread across Ernakulam, Kaloor and Fort Kochi rather than clustered near any one landmark. Add OLX listings, Justdial dealers and the wholesale lanes of Broadway, and the city has a real used-goods economy, it is just scattered rather than concentrated in one flea market the way some cities have one. Here is where the genuine trade happens, and the checks worth running before you hand over cash for a phone or a two-wheeler.

Where do you buy second-hand books in Kochi?

More places than most people realise, and prices genuinely undercut new copies by half or more on textbooks.

Call ahead if you are hunting a specific title. Stock at a second-hand shop is whatever walked in that week, not a catalogue.

What is Broadway actually known for?

Not second-hand goods, despite the reputation. Broadway is a roughly 2 kilometre wholesale street in Ernakulam running from Basin Road to Chamber Road, and it is genuinely one of the oldest commercial stretches in the city, historically home to tailoring houses, textile shops and trading firms going back to the early 1900s. What you will find there today is new stock at wholesale prices, spices, clothing, jewellery, electronics, stationery and leather goods, rather than a flea market of used items. It is worth a visit for the density of small traders and the older Kochi atmosphere, just not as your first stop for second-hand shopping specifically.

Where can you buy used furniture in Kochi?

Mostly online now. OLX carries thousands of active furniture listings across Kochi, with the heaviest concentration in Kakkanad, Kaloor and Edappally, sofas, beds, wardrobes and dining sets from people relocating or upgrading. Physical dealers cluster around Palarivattom and Vyttila, useful if you want to see and negotiate on a piece in person rather than trust photographs. Whichever route you take, check joinery and the underside of upholstery for termite damage before moving anything into a Kochi apartment. The humidity here is unkind to furniture left in storage. If you run a used-goods shop yourself, list it on our Business Directory.

How do you check a used phone isn't stolen?

Dial *#06# on the phone to get its IMEI number, then check that number on the Department of Telecommunications' CEIR portal at ceir.sancharsaathi.gov.in, the official Sanchar Saathi system that tracks and can block stolen or lost handsets nationwide. A blocked IMEI will not register as usable on any Indian network, so this single check, which takes under a minute, rules out the most common scam in second-hand phone sales. Also match the IMEI printed on the box or under the battery tray against what the phone itself reports, and insist on the original bill or at minimum a written note of sale with the seller's phone number.

What should you check before buying a used bike?

Match three things before you pay: the registration certificate, the chassis number stamped on the frame, and the engine number. All three need to agree with each other and with the RC. Check for pending challans and confirm the RC is not under a loan hypothecation on the Parivahan portal. Once you have agreed a price, complete the ownership transfer properly rather than riding on a bill of sale alone; our guide to RC transfer in Kochi covers the RTO paperwork. Skipping this step is one of the most common regrets second-hand bike buyers report, since traffic fines for a vehicle you no longer technically own can keep arriving for years.
