Kochi to Ooty: Train vs Bus vs Car, and Which One to Pick
Ooty is about 270 km from Kochi by road. There is no direct train. Compare driving, the bus and train routes via Coimbatore, and the Nilgiri toy train.
Ooty is about 271 km from Kochi by road, which Rome2Rio estimates at around 4.5 hours of driving, and the car is the easiest way to do it. There is no direct train: you go by rail to Coimbatore or Palakkad and finish by road, or catch the Nilgiri Mountain Railway's toy train from Mettupalayam, which leaves at 7:10 am. Buses work but take about 9 to 11 hours with changes. Our pick is to drive, unless the toy train is the reason you are going.

Figures are from Rome2Rio, checked in October 2026. Prices are estimates.
| Option | Typical time | Cost (as of October 2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car | About 4.5 hours for 271 km | Fuel and tolls; a direct taxi about Rs 6,500 to 8,000 | Families and anyone with luggage |
| Train to Palakkad, then taxi | About 5.5 hours in total | Train from Rs 160 sleeper, then a taxi of Rs 3,500 or more | People who would rather not drive the Kerala stretch |
| Train to Coimbatore, then bus | About 9 hours | Train from about Rs 180 sleeper, plus a cheap bus | Budget travellers |
| Bus | About 9 to 11 hours with changes | Roughly Rs 600 to 1,800 across the legs | Budget travellers without a train booking |
Our verdict: drive, or hire a cab if no one in your group wants the ghat road. Every public-transport route involves at least one change, and the cheapest ones eat most of a day.
Is there a direct train from Kochi to Ooty?
No. Rome2Rio's rail options run from Ernakulam Junction to either Palakkad, about 2 hours 47 minutes, or Coimbatore, about 4 hours 17 minutes, and then continue by road. Our Kochi to Coimbatore guide and Kochi to Palakkad guide cover that first leg in detail.
How do you catch the Ooty toy train?
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India, runs train 56136 from Mettupalayam at 7:10 am, reaching Ooty around noon. It waits for the overnight Nilgiri Express from Chennai to arrive, so it is built around morning connections, not a same-day start from Kochi. Realistically you need to sleep in Coimbatore or Mettupalayam the night before.
- Book on IRCTC well ahead; first-class seats sell out early, especially April to June and on holidays.
- Expect a slow climb of nearly 5 hours. That is the point; it is a ride, not a commute.
- If you just want to see the train, it also runs between Coonoor and Ooty.
Is it worth the extra night? If anyone in your group loves trains, yes. If you just want a cool weekend in the hills, drive.
Which road do you take from Kochi to Ooty?
The usual route runs north through Thrissur to Palakkad, across to Coimbatore, then up to Mettupalayam and the ghat road through Coonoor. Coimbatore to Ooty alone is about 90 km. The Coonoor ghat has 14 numbered hairpin bends, so leave time and avoid driving it after dark if you can. Drivers who prefer fewer bends can go up via Kotagiri, which has only a handful of hairpins but is slightly longer.
