Kochi to Kozhikode: Train vs Bus vs Car, and Which to Pick
Kochi to Kozhikode is about 190 km by rail. Vande Bharat does it in under 3 hours; how the other trains, KSRTC buses and the drive compare.
Kochi to Kozhikode is about 190 km by rail and roughly 180 to 200 km by road, depending on the route, and the fastest way to do it is the Kasaragod-bound Vande Bharat (20634), which leaves Ernakulam Town at 08:20 and reaches Kozhikode at 11:03, about 2 hours 43 minutes, according to published timetables. For almost everyone the train is the right answer. The bus is a fallback for sold-out days, and driving only makes sense if you need the car in Malabar.

The four options side by side
| Option | Distance | Typical time | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vande Bharat | About 190 km by rail | About 2 hours 45 minutes | Chair car only and pricier; each service skips one day a week |
| Jan Shatabdi and other express trains | About 190 km by rail | About 3 to 5.5 hours | Slower; check the duration, not just the departure |
| KSRTC bus | Roughly 180 to 200 km by road | Close to 5 hours on average | Traffic decides your arrival time |
| Car | Roughly 180 to 200 km by road | Several hours | Tiring, and the traffic is unpredictable |
What trains run from Kochi to Kozhikode?
A lot of them. Erail lists 43 trains between Ernakulam and Kozhikode across the week, many of them long-distance trains heading north up the coast, so if one train is full there is usually another option the same day. The ones worth knowing for a day trip:
- Jan Shatabdi (12076): daily, leaves Ernakulam Junction at 09:15 and reaches Kozhikode at 13:00. The sensible non-Vande Bharat morning option.
- Kannur Jan Shatabdi (12082): leaves Ernakulam Town at 19:03 and reaches Kozhikode at 22:37, useful after a working day. Check its running days before you plan around it.
- Night trains: the Maveli Express (16604) leaves Ernakulam Junction at 23:30 and the Malabar Express (16629) leaves Ernakulam Town at 23:55, both reaching Kozhikode before 5 am. Fine if you can sleep on a train; miserable if you cannot.
Not every train is quick. The Parasuram Express (16650) takes about 5 hours 30 minutes on the same stretch, so look at the duration, not only the departure time. And check which Ernakulam station your train uses; our Ernakulam Junction vs Town guide explains why it matters.
Is there Vande Bharat from Ernakulam to Kozhikode?
Yes, two, and they use different Kochi stations.
- 20634 (Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod): leaves Ernakulam Town at 08:20, reaches Kozhikode at 11:03. Does not run on Thursdays.
- 20632 (Thiruvananthapuram to Mangaluru): leaves Ernakulam Junction at 18:45, reaches Kozhikode at 21:32. Does not run on Wednesdays.
Coming back, the 20631 leaves Kozhikode at 08:59 and reaches Ernakulam Junction at 11:40. The morning 20634 is the one we would book: you are in Kozhikode before lunch with the whole afternoon free. The same two trains also cover the shorter Kochi to Thrissur run if you only need to go part of the way.
Is the KSRTC bus worth it?
Only when the trains are booked out. KSRTC runs dozens of services between Ernakulam and Kozhikode, including Swift buses. The problem is time: booking sites put the average run at close to five hours, against under three for Vande Bharat. On a festival weekend when every train shows a waiting list, it beats not going. Otherwise, take the train.
What's the fastest way from Kozhikode to Cochin?
The Vande Bharat again. The 20631 does Kozhikode to Ernakulam Junction in about 2 hours 41 minutes. Driving takes several hours, and the traffic on the way is not something to count on. The car makes sense for a group of four, a trip with stops, or when you need wheels once you arrive.
