Angamaly is a municipal town in Ernakulam district, about 30 km north of Kochi's city centre and about 7 km from Cochin International Airport, and its railway station is the closest one to the airport, roughly 5 km away. National Highway 544 runs through it and the MC Road ends here, which is why Angamaly is less a suburb of Kochi than a junction town that happens to sit at the airport's doorstep.

What is the distance between Angamaly and Kochi?

About 30 km to the city centre. The practical distances:

ToDistanceHow
Cochin International AirportAbout 7 km from town, about 5 km from the stationRoad
Aluva railway stationAbout 10 kmTrain or NH 544
Ernakulam Town railway stationAbout 26 kmTrain
Kochi city centreAbout 30 kmTrain, or road via Aluva

The train is the honest answer for getting into the city. Angamaly station is a halt for around 48 trains, including express services, so you are rarely waiting long for something heading south. The Kochi Metro does not reach Angamaly; its Blue Line ends at Aluva, which our Aluva neighbourhood guide covers.

Is Angamaly a city or town?

A town, governed by its own municipality, and part of the wider Kochi metropolitan area rather than the Kochi Corporation. The 2011 census counted 33,465 people in the municipality, and about 72 per cent of them were Christian, which tells you a lot about the town's character. It is small enough that the main junction, the KSRTC depot and the railway station are all close together; the depot is about 2 km from the station.

What is Angamaly famous for?

  • St George's Basilica: the Syro-Malabar Catholic basilica is the town's landmark. Angamaly was also once the headquarters of Mar Abraham, the last East Syriac bishop in Kerala.
  • Being a transport junction: NH 544 passes through, the MC Road from Thiruvananthapuram ends here, and the station is the airport's nearest rail link.
  • The 1959 police firing: Angamaly is remembered in Kerala's political history for the police firing during the agitation against the first communist government.
  • Rambutan: read our story on an Angamaly rambutan estate, where rubber gave way to fruit.

Is Angamaly a good place to live?

For the right person, yes. If you work at the airport, fly often, or need to get to Thrissur and the north as easily as to Kochi, Angamaly is hard to beat: you are minutes from the terminal and on the main rail line. It is also a real town with its own life, not a dormitory estate.

For anyone commuting daily to Kakkanad, Vyttila or the south of the city, it is the wrong choice. You are 30 km from the centre with no metro, and the road south crosses the narrow Marthandavarma bridge at Aluva and passes more than ten traffic signals on the 23 km stretch to Edappally. Live in Angamaly for the airport and the trains, not for a Kochi office job. If you do fly a lot, our CIAL terminal guide is the next thing to read.

What is coming next?

Two projects would change Angamaly, and neither is certain yet:

  • Kochi Metro Phase 3: Kochi Metro Rail Limited has submitted a detailed project report for an 18 km extension from Aluva to Angamaly via Kariyad and the airport, including a 3 km underground section to the airport. As of September 2026, it still needs state and Union approval.
  • Sabari rail: the proposed line to Erumeli, for Sabarimala pilgrims, would start from Angamaly. Its estimated cost was put at Rs 3,810 crore as of November 2025. Our Sabarimala from Kochi guide explains how pilgrims travel in the meantime.
