Is Thattekad Bird Sanctuary worth visiting?
Yes, if you go for the birds and go early. Thattekad was Kerala's first bird sanctuary, notified in 1983, and the ornithologist Salim Ali, who surveyed the area in 1933 and recommended protecting it, described it as the richest bird habitat on peninsular India. Kerala Tourism puts the count at over 270 species across roughly 25 sq km at the foot of the Western Ghats.
The names that bring serious birders here include the Malabar trogon, the Malabar grey hornbill, the Sri Lanka (Ceylon) frogmouth, the crimson-throated barbet and the grey-headed fish eagle. Kerala Tourism lists the frogmouth among the sanctuary's rare species.
Here is the honest part. If you turn up at noon expecting a zoo, you will see a pleasant patch of forest and not much else. Birds keep their own hours, and the sanctuary rewards patience, binoculars and an early alarm far more than it rewards a quick drive-through. For a lazier bird outing inside the city, Mangalavanam near the High Court is a smaller, easier option.
What is the entry fee for Thattekad Bird Sanctuary?
These are the rates reported by local operator Thattekad Trails for the Salim Ali trail. Add 18% GST to each. Other sources quote different figures, so treat them as a guide.
| Item | Fee (before GST) |
|---|---|
| Adult | Rs 60 |
| Child | Rs 45 |
| Foreign visitor | Rs 200 |
| Still camera | Rs 45 |
| Video camera | Rs 255 |
| Boating on the Periyar | Rs 150 per person |
Parking is charged separately by vehicle type. Fees change, so carry a little extra cash and a UPI app in case the gate rate is different.
Which river flows through the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary?
The Periyar, Kerala's longest river. The sanctuary sits between branches of the river, and the reservoir of the nearby Bhoothathankettu dam creates the lagoons and marshes that draw water birds. The name Thattekad is usually translated as flat forest, which fits: this is moist lowland forest, not high hill country.
Beyond the forest trails, Kerala Tourism lists a deer park, a butterfly park and a taxidermy museum on site, plus boating and nature walks. Families with children who will not sit still for a two-hour bird watch will find enough to keep them occupied.
How do you get to Thattekad from Kochi?
- By car or taxi: the simplest option. Head towards Kothamangalam; the sanctuary is about 12 km beyond the town. Plan on one to two hours from Kochi depending on traffic, which is the main reason to leave before dawn.
- From the airport: Cochin International Airport is roughly 45 km away, so it works as a stop on the way in or out of Kochi.
- By train: the nearest railway station is Aluva, about 50 km away, so you still need road transport for the last leg.
Thattekad pairs well with the Bhoothathankettu dam area next door for a full day out. If you are collecting day trips, our list of the best day trips from Kochi has more within a couple of hours' drive.
When is the best time to go?
October to March is the recommended season, and the winter months bring migratory species on top of the resident birds. The monsoon is the time to skip: heavy rain can make birding difficult and the sanctuary may close.
Whatever the month, the rule is the same: arrive for the 7 am opening, stay quiet, and give it a few hours. Visitors must be out of the sanctuary by 6 pm. For more ideas for a weekend outside the city, browse our Things To Do section.
