How to Withdraw PF Online: The EPF Rules, Limits and Timelines
Partial EPF withdrawal needs 12 months of service; claims up to Rs 5 lakh auto-settle in about 3 days. The 25% rule, job-leaving limits, and fixes.
You can make a partial EPF withdrawal online after 12 months of service, and advance claims of up to Rs 5 lakh are settled automatically, usually within about three days, provided your Aadhaar, PAN and bank account are linked and verified on your UAN. The catch most people miss is that 25% of your EPF balance must stay in the account, so "100% withdrawal" means 100% of the eligible balance, not the whole thing.

The withdrawal rules in one table
EPFO's Central Board of Trustees approved a simplification of partial withdrawals in October 2025, merging 13 separate provisions into three categories. Those rules are now in force under the EPF Scheme, 2026, which took effect on 29 June 2026 and replaced the 1952 scheme. The main points:
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Three categories | Essential needs (illness, education, marriage), housing, and special circumstances |
| How much | Up to 100% of the eligible balance, employee and employer share |
| Minimum balance | 25% of your EPF balance must stay in the account |
| Service needed | 12 months, for all partial withdrawals |
| Education and marriage | Up to 10 withdrawals for education and 5 for marriage |
| Special circumstances | No need to give a reason |
| Auto-settlement | Advance claims up to Rs 5 lakh, raised from Rs 1 lakh in June 2025 |
How do I withdraw PF online?
Everything runs on your UAN, the Universal Account Number. Before you start, make sure the three things below are done, because a claim with a gap in KYC drops out of auto-settlement and waits for an officer:
- Aadhaar linked to your UAN, with name and date of birth matching your records.
- PAN verified on the account.
- Bank account verified and seeded, with the correct IFSC.
Then log in to the EPFO member portal or the UMANG app, choose the online claim option, pick the purpose, enter the amount and submit. As of August 2026, The Week reported that new UAN generation and activation had moved to the UMANG app with Aadhaar face authentication, so anyone starting their first job should begin there.
How long does PF withdrawal take?
When EPFO raised the auto-settlement limit in June 2025, the government said advance claims of up to Rs 5 lakh would be settled within three days, with no officer approving them by hand. It also reported a record 2.34 crore advance claims settled automatically in 2024-25. Claims above the limit, or with mismatched details, go through manual processing and take longer.
Honest advice: the commonest avoidable delay is a KYC mismatch, such as a name spelt one way in Aadhaar and another in the employer's records. Fix that before you need the money, not during a medical emergency.
Can I withdraw my full PF after leaving a job?
Partly, straight away. After the October 2025 changes drew criticism, the Labour Ministry clarified that up to 75% of the EPF balance can be withdrawn immediately on leaving a job, with the remaining 25% available after 12 months without employment. The pension (EPS) component waits 36 months. Permanent migration out of India is listed as an exception that allows full withdrawal, but a fixed-term Gulf contract may not count as permanent migration, so check with EPFO before you rely on it, and read our guide to verifying a Gulf recruiting agent before you resign.
If you are only switching jobs, for example between companies in Infopark or SmartCity, a transfer usually beats a withdrawal, because the balance keeps earning interest. The Week reported that transfers for members with an Aadhaar-linked UAN and approved KYC have been largely automated, with fewer approvals and the transfer form now handled online. Our guide to IT life in Kakkanad covers the rest of the paperwork that comes with a switch, and NRE vs NRO accounts is the next decision for anyone heading abroad.
What if my PF claim is rejected or stuck?
File a grievance on EPFiGMS, EPFO's online grievance system at epfigms.gov.in. You choose whether you are a member, pensioner or employer, enter your UAN, verify by OTP, describe the problem and upload documents. EPFO then routes it to the relevant section, and resolution typically takes 15 to 30 days. Read the rejection reason carefully first: KYC mismatches are often something you can fix yourself before re-filing. More practical how-tos are in our Guides section.
