Kochi to Goa: Train vs Flight vs Bus, and Which One to Pick
Goa is about 770 km from Kochi by road. Compare the 29 trains to Madgaon, the direct flight to Dabolim and the long bus route, with our pick.
Goa is about 770 km north of Kochi by road, and for most people the train is the right way to get there. As of October 2026 erail lists 29 trains from Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town to Madgaon, taking roughly 12 to 16 hours, with sleeper fares around Rs 380 on its fare chart. The one direct flight, IndiGo's daily Kochi to Dabolim service, takes about an hour and 20 minutes. There is no sensible direct bus. Our pick is an overnight train if you can get a berth, and the flight if you only have a long weekend.

Figures are from erail and Rome2Rio, checked in October 2026. Fares move with demand, so treat them as a guide.
| Option | Typical time | Cost (as of October 2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train to Madgaon | About 12 to 16 hours | About Rs 380 sleeper, Rs 1,030 3AC, Rs 1,485 2AC on erail's fare chart | Almost everyone, especially overnight |
| Direct flight to Dabolim | About 1 hour 20 minutes in the air | Rome2Rio estimates roughly Rs 6,000 to 11,000 for the flight, about Rs 7,100 to 13,300 door to door | Short trips where a day matters |
| Flight to Mopa | Rome2Rio shows only one-stop routings, about 3 hours 50 minutes or more | Rome2Rio estimates roughly Rs 9,000 to 16,000 | Only if you are staying in north Goa and Dabolim fares are silly |
| Bus | About 21 hours with changes at Udupi and Gokarna on Rome2Rio | Roughly Rs 2,100 to 2,900 across the legs | Nobody, honestly |
| Drive | About 770 km, which Rome2Rio puts at 11.5 hours | Fuel and tolls | Road-trippers who want to stop in Karnataka on the way |
Our verdict: take the train unless time is genuinely tight. A sleeper or 3AC berth on an overnight train costs a fraction of the flight, and you lose no daylight. The bus is not worth it; there is no single bus on Rome2Rio's listing, only a chain of three.
Which trains go from Kochi to Goa?
Almost every long-distance train heading up the Konkan coast stops at Madgaon, which is why the list is so long. Only some run daily, so check the running days on NTES or IRCTC before you plan around one. A few worth knowing, as listed on erail in October 2026:
| Train | Leaves Ernakulam Jn | Reaches Madgaon | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16346 Netravati Express | 13:15 | 03:50 next day | Daily |
| 12224 Ernakulam to LTT Duronto | 21:30 | 09:45 next day | Overnight, Sundays and Wednesdays only |
| 12283 Ernakulam to Nizamuddin Duronto | 23:25 | 11:25 next day | Fastest on erail's list at 12 hours, Tuesdays only |
| 12617 Mangala Lakshadweep Express | 10:30 | 01:10 next day | Daily |
The Netravati gets you in at about 4 in the morning, which sounds worse than it is if you are heading to south Goa beaches near Madgaon. If your dates line up with one of the two Durontos, book it: board after dinner, wake up in Goa. If you are staying near Panaji or north Goa, Karmali station is closer than Madgaon, and Rome2Rio shows the Netravati stopping there.

Why do Goa trains take longer in the monsoon?
Konkan Railway runs a separate monsoon timetable every year; the 2026 one is dated 15 June to 20 October, and the dates shift each year. The train timings in this guide were checked in mid-October 2026, while that timetable was still in force, so some may change after it ends. Trains run slower on the landslide-prone stretches of the Konkan coast during that window, and some departure times shift. If you book a trip for the monsoon months, check the timing of your exact train on NTES or konkanrailway.com close to the date rather than trusting a timetable you saw in March.
Is there a direct flight from Kochi to Goa?
Yes, to Dabolim (GOI) in south Goa. Rome2Rio lists a daily IndiGo direct flight from Cochin International Airport taking about an hour and 20 minutes. Goa's newer airport at Mopa (GOX) in the north had no direct Kochi flight on Rome2Rio's listing; every option ran through Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Mumbai. If you fly, our DigiYatra guide for Cochin airport will save you the queue at the entry gate.
Can you take a bus from Kochi to Goa?
Technically. Rome2Rio's routes all involve a bus from Aluva to Udupi, a change to Gokarna, then another bus to Panaji, adding up to around 21 hours. That is longer than the slowest train and costs more than a sleeper berth. The only case for it is when every train is waitlisted and flights are out of budget.
Quick tips
- Overnight trains to Goa fill early around Christmas and New Year; book as soon as the reservation window opens.
- Check whether your train leaves from Ernakulam Junction or Ernakulam Town; erail's list mixes both.
