Kochi to Kanyakumari: Train vs Bus vs Car, and Which One to Pick

Kanyakumari is about 300 km from Kochi. Compare the four daily direct trains, the KSRTC bus and driving NH 66, with times and fares, and our pick.

Kanyakumari is about 300 km south of Kochi, and the train is the way to do it. As of October 2026 four direct trains leave Ernakulam Town for Kanyakumari every day, taking between about 6.5 and 8 hours, with sleeper fares around Rs 190. The direct KSRTC bus takes about 8 hours, and driving NH 66 can take anywhere from 4.5 to 8 hours depending on traffic. Our pick is the 07:15 Kanyakumari Express, which gets you to the cape by mid-afternoon.

Train vs bus vs car: which should you pick?

Figures are from erail, Rome2Rio and cab-booking sites, checked in October 2026.

OptionDistanceTypical timeCost (as of October 2026)Best for
Direct train271 km by railAbout 6.5 to 8 hoursAbout Rs 190 sleeper, Rs 495 3AC, Rs 700 2AC on erail's fare chartAlmost everyone
BusAbout 300 kmAbout 8 hours 15 minutes on Rome2Rio's direct KSRTC listingRs 340 to 480 on Rome2RioLast-minute trips when trains are full
Car or taxiAbout 300 km via NH 664.5 to 8 hours depending on trafficFuel and tolls, or one-way cabs from about Rs 6,300 on booking sitesFamilies who want to stop at Varkala or Kovalam on the way

Our verdict: the train wins easily. A sleeper berth costs a fraction of a cab, you can sleep or read instead of watching traffic, and the timetable does not depend on how NH 66 behaves that day. Drive only if you are turning the trip into a coastal road trip with stops.

What trains go from Kochi to Kanyakumari?

erail lists 12 trains between Ernakulam and Kanyakumari district, but several end at Nagercoil, the district's main town, and leave you with a road leg to the cape. These are the useful ones that run through to Kanyakumari station, as listed in October 2026:

TrainLeaves Ernakulam TownReaches KanyakumariRuns
16381 Kanyakumari Express03:5011:55Daily
16526 Kanyakumari Express07:1514:50Daily
16649 Parasuram Express13:5521:30Daily (chair car and second sitting only)
22504 Vivek Express15:0521:45Daily

The 07:15 is the one we would book; the Vivek Express is the quickest, at about 6 hours 40 minutes, if an afternoon start suits you. The 03:50 means leaving home in the middle of the night, and the Parasuram reaches Kanyakumari at 21:30 with no sleeper berths on board. If you want to travel overnight instead, the daily 16128 leaves Ernakulam Junction at 01:20 and reaches Nagercoil Town at 06:30. Not sure which Ernakulam station you are leaving from? Our Ernakulam Junction vs Town guide explains the difference.

Is there any Vande Bharat train to Kanyakumari?

No. As of October 2026, no Vande Bharat appears among the trains erail lists from Ernakulam to Kanyakumari. Kerala's Vande Bharat trains run no further south than Thiruvananthapuram, so a Vande Bharat leg would still leave you changing trains or taking a taxi for the last stretch, which defeats the point. Our Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram guide covers that route if you plan to break the journey there.

How long is the drive or the bus?

By road it is about 300 km, nearly all of it on NH 66 down the coast, which passes Alappuzha, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram, mostly on bypasses, and ends at Kanyakumari. Route planners put the drive anywhere from about 4.5 to 8 hours, and traffic decides which end of that range you get.

  • Bus: Rome2Rio lists a direct KSRTC bus from Ernakulam twice a day, taking about 8 hours 15 minutes for Rs 340 to 480. KSRTC seats can be booked online; our KSRTC booking guide walks through it.
  • Taxi: booking sites listed one-way cabs from about Rs 6,300 as of October 2026, rising with the size of the car.
  • Self-drive: worth it only if you want to stop. Varkala is a detour of about 10 km off the highway, and Kovalam sits right by it.

Which airport is near to Kanyakumari?

Kanyakumari has no airport. The nearest is Trivandrum International Airport, and travel guides put it at roughly 80 to 95 km from the cape. From Kochi, the airport is irrelevant: the train gets you there directly. It only matters if you are flying in from another city.
