Kochi to Wayanad: Train vs Bus vs Car, and Which One to Pick

Wayanad has no railway station. Compare the train to Kozhikode, the direct KSRTC bus and driving the Thamarassery ghat, with times and costs.

Winding road through the forests of Wayanad

Wayanad has no railway station, so every trip from Kochi ends on the road. You have three real choices: a direct bus to Kalpetta, usually 6 to 7 hours; driving the 240 km or so yourself; or the train to Kozhikode followed by about 70 km of road up the Thamarassery ghat. For most people we would take the morning Vande Bharat (20634, Ernakulam Town 08:20, Kozhikode 11:03 as of October 2026, no Thursday run) and do the hill section by bus or taxi.

Train vs bus vs car: which should you pick?

Figures below are from route planners and booking sites as of October 2026. Treat the times as best case: all three options share the same ghat road for the last stretch, and that road decides your arrival time.

OptionDistanceTypical timeCost (as of October 2026)Best for
Train to Kozhikode + bus or taxiRail to Kozhikode, then about 70 km by road to KalpettaAbout 2 hours 45 minutes by Vande Bharat, plus the road legTrain fare plus a bus or taxi up the ghatMost people, especially solo travellers and couples
Direct bus to KalpettaAbout 240 km by roadUsually 6 to 7 hoursKSRTC listed from Rs 303 on IxigoBudget trips and overnight travel
CarAbout 240 to 245 kmPlanners say about 4 hours; plan for much longerFuel and tolls, or Rs 5,500 to 7,000 for a taxi per Rome2RioFamilies, groups, and anyone touring the district

Our verdict: the train wins because it takes the slow, traffic-heavy coastal stretch out of your hands. The bus is the cheapest and fine if you can sleep sitting up. The car only earns its keep once you are in Wayanad, where the sights are spread out and getting between them by bus is slow.

Is there a train to Wayanad?

No. Incredible India, the national tourism site, states plainly that Wayanad has no railway station of its own and names Kozhikode as the nearest railhead. From Kozhikode station, route listings put Kalpetta about 70 km away by road, and taxis and buses run to Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady.

The useful trains for this trip:

  • Vande Bharat 20634: as of October 2026, leaves Ernakulam Town at 08:20, reaches Kozhikode at 11:03. Listed as not running on Thursdays; check running days on the NTES app or IRCTC before booking.
  • Jan Shatabdi 12076: as of October 2026, leaves Ernakulam Junction at 09:15, reaches Kozhikode around 13:00 and runs daily.

Our Kochi to Kozhikode guide covers the full list of trains, including the overnight options. Heading to Mananthavady instead? Vadakara station is about 66 km from the town and worth checking.

Is there a direct KSRTC bus from Kochi to Wayanad?

Yes. Ixigo lists 12 KSRTC Kerala buses on the Ernakulam to Kalpetta route alongside private operators, with KSRTC fares starting at Rs 303 as of October 2026.

Book the night bus if you can. You reach the hills around daybreak and skip the daytime crawl on the ghat. Our KSRTC online booking guide walks through reserving a seat.

How many hairpin bends are on the Thamarassery ghat?

Nine. The Thamarassery Churam is about 14 km of NH 766 between Adivaram and the Lakkidi viewpoint, and it is the standard road up from Kozhikode to Kalpetta. It is beautiful, and it is also the weak link of the whole trip.

  • During the 2026 monsoon, from 3 June, the Kozhikode district administration barred multi-axle heavy vehicles from the ghat between 6 am and 8 pm. Curbs like this come and go with the weather, so check before you travel.
  • As of June 2026, NHAI had awarded a Rs 37 crore contract to widen the 6th, 7th and 8th bends, and roadworks of this kind narrow the road while they last.
  • In July 2026 a truck breakdown at the fourth bend caused a jam that lasted more than 10 hours.

Our advice for drivers: climb in daylight, carry water and snacks, and check the Wayanad Churam Samrakshana Samithi app for live updates on jams and landslips before you leave Kozhikode.

Which airport is nearest to Wayanad?

Calicut International Airport is about 81 km from Kalpetta. For the north of the district, Kannur International Airport is about 83 km from Mananthavady. If you are starting in Kochi, flying makes no sense; the airports matter for visitors flying in from elsewhere. Our Kochi airport vs Kannur airport guide compares the two.
