Royal Enfield's Hunterhood Brought Its Street Festival to Kochi on August 8

Kochi gets plenty of gigs. What it does not usually get is an afternoon where a skate session, a chenda ensemble and five custom motorcycle workshops are booked onto the same patch of ground. That is the shape of Hunterhood, Royal Enfield's street culture platform, which made its Kochi debut on Saturday 8 August at The Grounds, Chakola Mill in Ernakulam, from 3:30 PM onwards.

The format is not an experiment. Hunterhood has already run in Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Shillong and Lucknow, and the idea has held in each city: put music, street sport, art and motorcycles in one open space and let people wander between them instead of sitting in rows facing a stage. Kochi is the newest stop on that list.

Four things happening at once

The programme is built to be walked through. There are skateboarding showcases, plus interactive zones set up for skimboarding, football, cricket and basketball, which means you can turn up on your own and still end up in a game. Live graffiti and visual art installations run through the afternoon, so the venue does not look the same at nine in the evening as it did when the gates opened.

Skimboarding is the surprise on that list, and a sensible one for a city with this much waterfront. Programming it next to a football zone suggests somebody did their homework on where they had landed rather than copy-pasting the Delhi run sheet.

Who is playing at Hunterhood in Kochi?

The main stage runs Tribe Mama MaryKali, Ranj X Clifr, GABRI, MC Couper, Baby Jean and Dabzee. That is a real cross-section of Kerala independent and hip-hop music rather than two touring headliners with local support slots pinned underneath them, and it is the clearest signal of what this event is trying to be.

A separate community stage carries Ameekha Liyana Ansar, DJ Dsco Patrol (Nihell) and the We Are The Boom collective, alongside traditional Chenda Melam percussionists. The chenda booking is the detail worth arriving early for. Kochi has heard chenda at temple grounds its whole life and has heard it run against modern production far less often, and doing that on a stage a few metres from a skate ramp is a different proposition to doing it in a concert hall. The motorcycles are half the point

This is a Royal Enfield platform, so the bikes are not decoration around the edges. Custom builds from XLNC Customs, JD Customs, Garuda Machina, Kunwar Customs and Eimor Customs are being showcased together, which is a rare chance to see work from several Indian custom workshops parked in one place in Kerala instead of scrolled past on a phone.

Custom motorcycle culture in India mostly lives in photographs. Builders are scattered across cities, the good work goes straight to a client's garage, and the only people who see it in person are the ones who commissioned it. An afternoon where five workshops put finished bikes in a public space, with the builders standing next to them, is worth an hour of anyone's time even if you have never ridden anything bigger than a scooter.

Is there a Hunterhood event before August 8?

Before the main event, a Hunterhood Community Pre-Jam runs on Wednesday 6 August at Loop Skatepark. That is the quieter, skate-first half of the week and probably the easier of the two to actually talk to people at, if standing in a crowd of a few thousand is not how you want to meet the scene.

Tickets for the 8th are sold through the District platform. Chakola Mill sits in Ernakulam proper rather than out towards Kakkanad, so this is a metro-and-walk evening rather than a drive-and-park one, and a 3:30 PM start that runs into the night is exactly the situation where it pays to have read up on getting around Kochi before you leave the house. Wear shoes you can stand in for five hours and do not bring anything you would mind carrying all night.

August in Kochi normally belongs to Onam from Atham onwards, and the city's attention narrows to flower carpets, sadya bookings and Athachamayam.
