Which train is best from Ernakulam to Chennai?

ConfirmTkt lists nine trains on the route, but only three run daily overnight and arrive at Chennai Central (MAS) at a sensible hour. These are the ones to book:

• Chennai Express (22640): leaves Ernakulam Junction 16:27, reaches Chennai Central 05:15. Daily. Sleeper from about Rs 435, 3A about Rs 1,120, 2A about Rs 1,565.
• Chennai Mail (12624): leaves Ernakulam Town 19:20, stops at Aluva 19:42, reaches Chennai Central 07:45. Daily. Sleeper from about Rs 430, 3A about Rs 1,110.
• Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Superfast (12696): leaves Ernakulam Town 21:30, reaches Chennai Central 10:00. Daily. Same fares as the Mail.

Our pick is the Chennai Mail. You can eat dinner at home, board at Ernakulam Town or Aluva, and walk out at Chennai Central before 8 in the morning. The 22640 gets you in at 05:15, which is fine if someone is picking you up and miserable if you have a 10 o'clock check-in. The 12696 is the one to book when you are on the way to a late-morning appointment.

How long is the flight from Kochi to Chennai?

About 1 hour 15 minutes non-stop from Cochin International Airport (COK) to Chennai International Airport (MAA). IndiGo flies the route non-stop. Rome2rio's door-to-door estimate for flying is closer to 5 hours once you add the drive to Nedumbassery, security and the ride into Chennai, so the real saving over the train is a night, not 11 hours.

Is it worth taking the bus or driving?

Rarely. Rome2rio puts the bus at about 13 hours 20 minutes with a change at Salem, which is longer than any of the three overnight trains, and the Ernakulam to Salem leg alone is roughly Rs 420 to Rs 1,500 before you pay for the rest of the trip. A sleeper berth all the way costs about Rs 430. Take the bus only when the trains are waitlisted, which is most likely around festivals and long weekends.

Driving is about 666 km and close to 10 hours of driving, on Rome2rio's figures. That is a long day on the road, and Rome2rio's cost estimate of Rs 7,560 to Rs 10,900 is more than four 2A berths. Drive only if you are moving a household or need the car in Chennai.

Which one should you book?

• Solo or couple, any budget: Chennai Mail (12624) in 3A.
• Tight budget: any of the three daily trains in sleeper class, at about Rs 430.
• Same-day meeting and back: fly, and book early.
