Kochi to Varkala: Train vs Car vs Bus, and Which One to Pick

The best way from Kochi to Varkala is the train: about 165 to 182 km on the rail route depending on the train, roughly 3 to 4 hours, landing at Varkala Sivagiri station, about 2 km from the cliff top. The fastest is the Jan Shatabdi 12075, Ernakulam Junction 17:25 to Varkala 20:13, and for a day trip the 05:10 Vanchinad Express (16303) gets you there by 08:45, according to the published timetable as of October 2026.

Train, car or bus: the short answer

OptionTimePick it if
TrainAbout 2 h 50 min to 4 h 15 minYou want the simplest trip (our pick)
Car or taxiAbout 3 to 4 hours, depending on trafficYou are a group of three or four, or plan stops on the way
BusAbout 5 to 6.5 hours, per bookaway listingsOnly if trains are full

Our honest verdict: for Varkala, the train is the easier choice. It runs on a well-served line with 19 daily services listed from the two Ernakulam stations, the station sits close to town, and you skip the NH66 traffic entirely.

Which train is best from Ernakulam to Varkala?

It depends on when you want to arrive. These are daily services from the published timetable as of October 2026; check the railway enquiry system before booking, because timetables are revised.

Note the two Kochi stations. If you are unsure which is closer to you, our guide to Ernakulam Junction vs Town sorts it out. None of the Vande Bharat services appears in the Ernakulam to Varkala timetable we pulled, so do not plan around one.

Coming back to Kochi

  • 12076 Jan Shatabdi: Varkala 06:33, Ernakulam Jn 09:10. Ideal if you need to be at work in Kochi the same morning.
  • 16342 Thiruvananthapuram-Guruvayur Express: Varkala 18:03, Ernakulam Jn 21:30. The early-evening option.
  • 16304 Vanchinad Express: Varkala 18:31, Ernakulam Jn 22:55. Later, but slower.
  • 16604 Maveli Express: Varkala 20:04, Ernakulam Jn 23:25. Lets you stay for sunset and dinner on the cliff.

Sunset on the cliff is the reason most people go, so if it is a day trip, the 18:03 return is a little early. The Maveli is the better choice for a full day.

How long is the drive from Kochi to Varkala?

Distance listings put it at about 160 km, and roughly 3 to 4 hours of driving depending on traffic. That is fine with a group sharing a taxi or if you want stops in Alappuzha or Kollam along the way, but on your own it is usually more tiring than the train. For the same stretch of coast, our Kochi to Kollam comparison and Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram guide cover the road options in more detail.

Getting from the station to the cliff

Varkala Sivagiri station is about 2 km from the cliff top and a little over 3 km from Papanasam beach, a short auto-rickshaw ride. The cliffs themselves run along the coast for about 7.5 km and are a designated National Geological Monument. Two other places worth knowing are close by: the Janardana Swami Temple, and Sivagiri Mutt, the ashram founded by Sree Narayana Guru, which holds his samadhi.
