Alappuzha vs Kumarakom Houseboats: Which to Pick from Kochi

For a first houseboat trip, pick Alappuzha: more boats, more canals, 50 minutes by train. When Kumarakom wins, and how to book a classified boat.

Traditional Kerala houseboat moored on a palm-lined backwater canal

For a first houseboat trip from Kochi, pick Alappuzha. It is about 62 km down NH 66, the fastest train from Ernakulam Junction gets you there in about 50 minutes, and it has far more boats and far more canals than Kumarakom. Pick Kumarakom only if you want a quiet lake and birds more than village channels, or if you are already staying at a resort there.

Which is better for a houseboat cruise, Alleppey or Kumarakom?

Alappuzha, for most people. Both towns sit on the same water: Vembanad, Kerala's largest lake, which goes by Punnamada Lake around Kuttanad and Kochi Lake up at our end. The difference is what surrounds it. Alappuzha has the dense web of narrow canals, paddy fields and waterside houses that people picture when they say "backwaters", and it has far more boats than Kumarakom, so you can choose by budget, size and boat. Kumarakom is a cluster of small islands with fewer canals, which means a houseboat there spends more of its day on open lake.

That open lake is lovely for about an hour. Over a full day, the Alappuzha routes simply have more to look at. Here is the honest catch with Alappuzha, though: because everyone goes there, the main boarding area at Finishing Point can feel like a car park of boats in season. If you want solitude, Alappuzha is not the place to look for it.

Our Kochi to Alappuzha transport guide covers the train, bus and car options in detail, and the Kochi to Kottayam guide does the same for the Kumarakom side.

Where to stay, Kumarakom or Alleppey?

If the houseboat is the stay, stay on it in Alappuzha. If you want a hotel room and a few hours on the water, Kumarakom does that better: its lakefront is lined with resorts, and the bird sanctuary is right there for an early walk. The sanctuary is run by KTDC, and when Onmanorama reported the 2021 fee revision the ticket for Indian visitors went to Rs 100. Our tip: go at opening time, when the light is soft and the paths are empty.

One rule applies in both places and surprises people: houseboats do not cruise after dark. Operators commonly board guests around noon, anchor for the night by about 5.30 pm and finish around 9 am the next day, with a short cruise in the morning. An overnight trip is therefore roughly six hours of moving water, less boarding and lunch. Ask your operator for their exact times before you book.

How far is Kumarakom from Alleppey by boat?

The cheap way across is the State Water Transport Department passenger boat between Kumarakom and Muhamma, on the Alappuzha side of the lake. The crossing takes roughly 40 to 45 minutes, and reports from 2022 onwards put the fare at about Rs 16. It is a working ferry, not a cruise, and it is one of the best-value hours on Vembanad. Confirm departure times at the jetty, since published timetables go out of date.

If you cannot decide, ask your operator whether a one-way Kumarakom to Alappuzha run is possible; it would give you open lake and canals in one go.

How do you book a houseboat without getting fleeced?

Look for a boat classified by Kerala Tourism. Under the revised scheme approved in 2019, approved boats are graded Silver, Gold or Diamond, with Diamond the best equipped; this replaced the earlier Silver Star, Gold Star and Green Palm categories. In Alappuzha, the District Tourism Promotion Council runs a prepaid houseboat counter, and advance booking is possible.

  • Ask how many hours the air conditioning runs; many boats only run it at night.
  • Confirm boarding and drop-off times in writing.
  • Ask whether meals are included and what is on the menu.
  • Weekends and holidays are the busiest; book early if you are tied to them.

Not ready for an overnight? A ride on the Water Metro or the old ferries gives you the backwater feel without leaving the city. More ideas in our things to do section.
