Kalady, the birthplace of the philosopher Adi Shankara, sits on the Periyar river between Angamaly and Perumbavoor, roughly 30 to 45 km from central Kochi depending on where you start and only a few kilometres from Cochin airport. Entry to the main shrines is free, the memorial tower charges a nominal ticket of around Rs 10, and the whole visit fits comfortably into two or three hours.

What is Kalady famous for?

Kalady is revered as the birthplace of Adi Shankara, the philosopher most associated with Advaita Vedanta, and the town's main shrine is run by the Sringeri Mutt. That one fact explains almost everything you will see: the temples, the memorial tower, the ashram, and the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, which also has its campus in the town. It is a pilgrimage town first and a sightseeing stop second, and it is worth visiting in that spirit.

What to see in Kalady

  • The Sringeri Mutt complex (Janmabhoomi): the heart of the visit. It holds shrines to Sharada and to Shankara, a Ganapati shrine, and the samadhi of Shankara's mother, Aryamba. Marble panels tell the story of his life. Photography is not allowed inside.
  • Sri Adi Sankara Keerthi Sthamba Mandapam: a tall memorial tower built by the Kanchi Kamakoti Math. A ramp spirals up past panels on Shankara's life, and the top floors give a wide view over the green countryside. Entry is a nominal ticket of around Rs 10, and it is the best value in town.
  • Crocodile Ghat (Muthala Kadavu): the bathing ghat on the Periyar tied to the story of Shankara's renunciation, when, according to legend, a crocodile seized his leg.
  • Sree Krishna Temple: regarded as the family deity of Shankara's household, and older than the other shrines in town.
  • Sri Ramakrishna Advaita Ashrama: a branch of the Ramakrishna Math, and a quiet place to sit.

What are the Kalady temple timings?

Like most Kerala temples, the Sringeri complex opens early, closes for the afternoon and reopens around 4 pm until about 8 pm. Published listings disagree on the exact hours, morning and evening, so the safe plan is simple: arrive before noon, or after 4 pm. The memorial tower keeps daytime hours. Dress conservatively, as you would for any Kerala temple.

Two festivals bring the crowds. Sankara Jayanti, the anniversary of Shankara's birth, runs for five days in April or May, and Navaratri falls in September or October. If you want a quiet visit, avoid both. For the town at its liveliest, go during them. Navaratri also brings Vidyarambham, when children are initiated into letters; our Vidyarambham guide explains the ritual.

How do you reach Kalady from Kochi?

Car or taxiBy road, out past the airport side of the cityRome2rio puts a taxi at about Rs 750 to Rs 950 from Ernakulam
Metro plus taxiKochi Metro to Aluva, then a cab or autoThe cheapest no-car option that avoids a bus change
TrainTo Angamaly, the nearest railway stationFinish with a short road hop to the temples

Because Kalady is so close to the airport, it also works as a stop on the way to or from a flight. If you are coming from the north side of the city, our Angamaly guide covers the area around the station.

Is Kalady worth a trip on its own?

For a devotee, yes. For everyone else, it is a two-to-three-hour stop rather than a full day out, and pretending otherwise will leave you killing time when the shrines shut for their midday break. Pair it with something. The obvious partner is Malayattoor, the hilltop St Thomas shrine on Kurisumudi, about 10 to 15 km to the northeast, which makes a morning that covers two of Kerala's oldest pilgrim traditions.
