Kochi to Mangaluru: Train vs Bus, and Which One to Pick
Vande Bharat 20632 gets from Ernakulam to Mangaluru in about 6 hours, but lands at 00:45. How the overnight trains and buses compare.
The fastest way from Kochi to Mangaluru is the Vande Bharat 20632, which leaves Ernakulam Junction at 18:45 and reaches Mangaluru Central at 00:45, about six hours, according to published timetables as of October 2026. Is there a Vande Bharat from Kochi to Mangalore?
Yes. The Mangaluru Central to Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat (20631/20632) stops at Ernakulam Junction, and runs six days a week, skipping Wednesdays. It began between Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram in September 2023 and was extended to Mangaluru in March 2024. Northbound, it also calls at Thrissur, Shoranur, Tirur, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod, so it doubles as a fast option for anywhere up the Malabar coast.
It is quick and comfortable, but think hard about that 00:45 arrival. Unless someone is meeting you or your hotel has a 24-hour desk, you are paying a premium to stand outside a station in the middle of the night. For a work trip where you need to be sharp at 9 am, the overnight Maveli is often the smarter choice.
What are the train times from Ernakulam to Mangalore?
The three that matter for a Kochi traveller:
- Vande Bharat (20632): Ernakulam Junction 18:45, Mangaluru Central 00:45. Not on Wednesdays.
- Maveli Express (16604): daily, Ernakulam Junction 23:30, Kozhikode around 03:30, Kannur around 05:00, Mangaluru Central 08:15.
- Malabar Express (16629): daily, from Ernakulam Town around midnight, Mangaluru Central 10:15. It makes many more stops and is the slowest train on the corridor, so take it only if the Maveli is full.
Note that the Malabar uses Ernakulam Town, not the Junction. Turning up at the wrong one at 11.30 pm is a classic Kochi mistake; our Ernakulam Junction vs Town guide explains the difference.
Is the bus worth it?
Only as a backup. Kerala's KSRTC sells Thiruvananthapuram to Mangalore seats on its own booking site. A bus makes sense when every train is waitlisted, but the Maveli does the run in under 9 hours, and a sleeper berth gives you far more room to stretch out than any bus seat.
If you do book a Kerala KSRTC seat, our KSRTC online booking guide explains the reservation fee, ID rules and cancellation slabs.
How do you get back to Kochi?
- Vande Bharat (20631): leaves Mangaluru Central at 06:25 and reaches Ernakulam Junction at 11:40, which makes it the best daytime return by a distance.
- Maveli Express (16603): the overnight option heading south.
- Malabar Express (16630): leaves Mangaluru at 18:15 for an overnight run.
Our verdict: go up on the Maveli, come back on the morning Vande Bharat. If you are only going part of the way, see our Kochi to Kozhikode comparison, and find more route guides in our Guides section.
