Which train is fastest from Ernakulam to Kottayam?
ConfirmTkt lists 25 trains on this stretch across the week, most of them long-distance expresses, so a seat is rarely the problem. The ones that take under an hour:
- Jan Shatabdi (12081): leaves Ernakulam at 09:33, reaches Kottayam at 10:25. Runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday only.
- Vivek Express (22504): leaves at 15:05, reaches at 15:57, daily.
- Vande Bharat (20633): leaves Ernakulam Town at 19:15, reaches Kottayam at 20:10. Does not run on Thursdays. It is overkill for a one-hour hop, but it is the quickest way home after work.
For an early start, the Vanchinad Express (16303) leaves Ernakulam Junction at 05:10 and reaches Kottayam at 06:20, daily. In the evening the Venad Express (16301) leaves at 17:20 and arrives at 18:27. Some trains use Ernakulam Town and some use Ernakulam Junction, so check before you head out; our Junction vs Town guide explains the difference.
Which morning train runs from Kottayam to Ernakulam?
If you are commuting into Kochi, these are the useful ones:
- Kottayam-Nilambur Express (16326): leaves Kottayam at 05:15, reaches Ernakulam at 06:35, daily. It starts at Kottayam, and listings show it as the cheapest option.
- Vande Bharat (20634): leaves Kottayam at 07:21, reaches Ernakulam Town at 08:17. Not on Thursdays.
- Venad Express (16302): leaves at 08:20, reaches at 09:40, daily.
- Sabari Express (20630): leaves at 09:35, reaches at 10:40, daily.
Some services crawl: the Parasuram Express (16650) needs about 1 hour 30 minutes and the Vanchinad back to Ernakulam Junction (16304) about 1 hour 46 minutes, so look at the arrival time, not just the departure.
Is the KSRTC bus worth it?
Only if you are going somewhere the train does not stop. Booking listings put the bus at about two hours and fares at roughly Rs 85 to Rs 160, so it is both slower and dearer than an unreserved train ticket. The one case for it is if your start point is nearer a bus route than either Ernakulam station.
How long is the drive from Kochi to Kottayam?
The road distance is about 65 km, and mapping estimates put it at around an hour with clear roads. The catch is the Kochi end: getting out of the city at rush hour can add a lot to that, and no estimate will tell you how much. Drive for a group of four, a trip with stops, or when you need the car once you arrive. For the other directions, see our comparisons for Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram, or browse Guides.
