FASTag Annual Pass for Kochi Drivers: Which Tolls It Covers and Is It Worth It

Rs 3,075 buys 200 NH toll crossings, about Rs 15 each. Weekly Thrissur drivers save thousands; daily Kumbalam commuters should check the Rs 350 local pass.

As of October 2026, the FASTag Annual Pass costs Rs 3,075 for 200 toll crossings or one year, whichever runs out first, which works out to about Rs 15.40 a crossing. For a Kochi driver it pays for itself after roughly 35 single crossings at Paliyekkara on NH544 (Rs 90 a car) or about 62 at Kumbalam on NH66 (Rs 50). In plain terms: a weekly Thrissur run makes it worth buying, a few toll crossings a month does not, and a daily Kumbalam commuter who lives within 20 km of the plaza should look at the Rs 350 monthly local pass first.

What the pass covers, and what it does not

The pass launched on 15 August 2025 at Rs 3,000, and NHAI raised it to Rs 3,075 from 1 April 2026. It sits on the FASTag you already have; nothing new goes on your windscreen. The rules that matter:

  • Limit: 200 crossings or one year from activation, whichever comes first.
  • Vehicles: private, non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans only. Use it on a commercial vehicle and it gets deactivated. It is tied to one vehicle and cannot be transferred.
  • Where it works: National Highway and National Expressway fee plazas run by NHAI and the road transport ministry, around 1,150 of them. State highways and state-run tolls still deduct from your wallet as usual.
  • Eligibility catches: a tag registered only against a chassis number does not qualify until the vehicle registration number is updated, and the pass fee cannot be paid from your FASTag wallet balance.
  • How trips are counted: at a normal plaza like Kumbalam, every crossing is one trip, so a there-and-back drive uses two. On closed-tolling expressways, one entry and exit pair counts as one.

Which Kochi toll plazas does it work at?

All the plazas a Kochi driver meets on regular trips sit on national highways. Car fees below are the rates being charged in 2026 (Paliyekkara is still on its 2024 rates); check the board at the plaza, since most NHAI plazas revise rates every 1 April (Paliyekkara on 1 September).

PlazaHighwayCar, one wayWhen you hit it

PonnarimangalamNH966A, Vallarpadam linkRs 65 (Rs 95 return)Driving to the Vallarpadam terminal side

Pambampallam (Walayar)NH544, Palakkad sideAbout Rs 80 (about Rs 120 return)Coimbatore and beyond

Paliyekkara deserves a footnote. NHAI approved a hike to Rs 100 a single trip in August 2026, but as of late August 2026 it was waiting on Kerala High Court clearance, the same court that suspended collection there in 2025 over congestion on the Edappally to Mannuthy stretch. Every rupee it goes up makes the pass a better deal. State-run tolls, such as the small RBDCK bridge tolls, are not covered.

Is the FASTag annual pass worth it?

The quick test: divide Rs 3,075 by your usual plaza's fee. That is how many crossings you need inside a year to come out ahead. Here is how it plays out for typical Kochi driving patterns, using the rates above:

Your drivingTolls without the passVerdict
Weekday commute through Kumbalam, 22 days a monthAbout Rs 1,540 a month at the Rs 70 same-day return fareBuy, unless you qualify for the Rs 350 local monthly pass. The 200 trips last about four and a half months, so a daily commuter needs the annual pass more than once a year
Weekly Kochi to Thrissur round tripAbout Rs 7,280 a year at the Rs 140 return rateBuy
Monthly Kochi to Coimbatore round tripPaliyekkara plus Pambampallam same-day returns, roughly Rs 260 a round trip, roughly Rs 3,120 a yearBarely worth it; the margin is thin

The local pass matters most for Kumbalam. NHAI's fee notice lists a Rs 350 monthly pass for residents within 20 km of the plaza (Ponnarimangalam's is also Rs 350). Twelve of those cost Rs 4,200 a year, against nearly three annual passes (about Rs 8,100) for a daily commuter. The official FAQ says you can hold both, and crossings at a plaza covered by a local pass are not counted against the annual pass.

Our view: for the weekly Thrissur visitor this is the easiest saving in Kochi motoring, and it suits a Kumbalam commuter who lives too far away for the local pass. For the city driver who leaves Ernakulam for a wedding or a Munnar weekend now and then, it is money spent upfront on crossings you will never make, because unused trips die with the one-year clock. If you are weighing the drive itself, our Kochi to Thrissur comparison and Kochi to Coimbatore guide set the toll against train and bus fares.

How can I activate my FASTag annual pass?

  • Open the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI website.
  • Enter your vehicle number and check eligibility: the FASTag must be properly fixed on the windscreen, linked to a valid registration and not blocked.
  • Pay Rs 3,075.
  • The pass goes live on your existing tag within about two hours.

What happens if I exceed the annual trip limit?

Nothing dramatic. Once you use 200 crossings or the year ends, the tag goes back to normal pay-per-crossing deduction, and you can buy the pass again. Keep some balance in the FASTag wallet anyway, for state tolls and for the day the pass lapses mid-trip. While you are sorting out your driving costs, it is worth a minute to check for any pending traffic e-challans too. More practical how-tos are in our Guides section.
