Kochi to Coimbatore: Train vs Bus vs Car, and Which to Pick
A Rs 100 Intercity gets you from Ernakulam to Coimbatore in under 4 hours. How the Vande Bharat, the bus and the drive compare, and which to book.
For most people, the best-value way to Coimbatore is the Bengaluru Intercity (16378): it leaves Ernakulam Junction at 09:05, reaches Coimbatore Junction at 12:47 and costs from about Rs 100 to Rs 110 in reserved second sitting (2S), per ConfirmTkt listings in October 2026. A Vande Bharat is quicker, at 2 hours 57 minutes. The drive is about 187 km and takes roughly 3 hours with clear roads.

Coimbatore by train, bus or car: the numbers
| Mode | Distance | Journey time | What it costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train | About 204 km by rail | 2 hours 57 minutes to about 5 hours 30 minutes | From about Rs 100 to Rs 110 in second sitting (2S) |
| Bus | About 187 km by road | About 3 hours 50 minutes | About Rs 600 to Rs 2,100 (Rome2rio estimate) |
| Own car | About 187 km | About 2 hours 55 minutes in clear traffic | About Rs 2,100 to Rs 3,100 (Rome2rio estimate) |
| Taxi | About 187 km | About 2 hours 55 minutes in clear traffic | About Rs 4,100 to Rs 5,000 |
Our pick for a solo traveller or a couple: the morning Intercity. It is the cheapest seat on the route, it runs daily, and it puts you in Coimbatore before lunch. The Vande Bharat saves you about 45 minutes for six to seven times the fare.
Is there a Vande Bharat train from Ernakulam to Coimbatore?
Yes. The Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat (26652) leaves Ernakulam Junction at 14:20 and reaches Coimbatore at 17:17, the quickest scheduled run between the two cities. Chair car fares start at about Rs 705 and executive chair car at about Rs 1,345. It does not run on Wednesdays.
In the other direction, the Vande Bharat (26651) leaves Coimbatore at 10:15 and reaches Ernakulam Junction at 13:50, with fares from about Rs 865. That is 3 hours 35 minutes, exactly as long as the morning Sabari Express takes to Ernakulam Town. On the return leg, pay the Vande Bharat premium only if the timing suits you, not for speed.
Which other trains are worth booking?
ConfirmTkt lists 20 trains from the Ernakulam area to Coimbatore. Most are long-distance expresses heading to Bengaluru, Chennai or further north, so book ahead. The useful daytime ones:
- Bengaluru Intercity (16378): Ernakulam Junction 09:05, Coimbatore 12:47, daily. Second sitting from about Rs 100 to Rs 110, chair car from about Rs 360.
- Ernakulam-Tatanagar Express (18190): Ernakulam Junction 07:15, Podanur Junction 11:28, daily. It does not call at Coimbatore Junction. Sleeper from about Rs 150.
- Sabari Express (20630): Ernakulam Town 10:45, Coimbatore 15:35, daily.
- Kerala Express (12625): Ernakulam Town 16:10, Coimbatore 20:50, daily.
Note that the Sabari and Kerala expresses leave from Ernakulam Town, not the Junction. If you are not sure which station is closer to you, our Junction vs Town guide sorts it out. The line runs via Thrissur and Palakkad, so the same trains serve the first half of the trip; see our Kochi to Palakkad comparison if you are stopping short.
What's the fastest way from Coimbatore to Kochi?
By the timetable, a car: Rome2rio puts the drive at just under 3 hours with clear roads, while the quickest daytime trains back take about 3 hours 35 minutes. The best return trains, all daily unless noted:
- Sabari Express (20629): leaves Coimbatore 09:15, reaches Ernakulam Town 12:50.
- Vande Bharat (26651): leaves 10:15, reaches Ernakulam Junction 13:50. Not on Wednesdays.
- Vivek Express (22504): leaves 10:50, reaches Ernakulam Town 15:00.
- Kerala Express (12626): leaves 12:35, reaches Ernakulam Town 16:30.
- Ernakulam Intercity (16377): leaves 13:00, reaches Ernakulam Junction 17:10, from about Rs 100 to Rs 110. The cheapest way home.
One trap: several trains, including the daily Tatanagar Express and a few specials, use Podanur Junction in south Coimbatore rather than Coimbatore Junction. Read the boarding station on your ticket twice.
Bus or car?
Rome2rio estimates the bus at about 3 hours 50 minutes, with fares of roughly Rs 600 to Rs 2,100 depending on the coach. That is slower than the Vande Bharat and the Intercity, and never cheaper than the Intercity's second sitting, so we would only take a bus if every train is full.
Drive if you are a group of three or four, carrying luggage for a hostel or college move, or heading on to the Nilgiris, where a car saves you a change at Coimbatore. Rome2rio's fuel estimate of about Rs 2,100 to Rs 3,100 for the car is roughly what four Vande Bharat chair car tickets cost (about Rs 2,820), and the car takes you door to door. Timetable note (as of October 2026)
Every train, time, running day and fare above comes from ConfirmTkt listings checked in October 2026, cross-checked on erail.in; road and bus figures are Rome2rio estimates from the same month. Railway timetables are revised, so check NTES or the IRCTC app before you leave home.
