IBM's GenAI Innovation Centre in Kochi: What It Actually Does

IBM opened its GenAI Innovation Centre inside the World Trade Centre tower at Infopark, Kakkanad, on 8 July 2024, and it is the third innovation centre IBM has built on that same campus since 2022. Here is what actually happens inside it, and why Kochi keeps getting picked for these launches.

What does the GenAI Innovation Centre actually do?

It is built for enterprises, startups and partners who are stuck between experimenting with generative AI and actually deploying it, which IBM has said is where most organisations get stuck. The centre works with InstructLab, a large-language-model tuning tool jointly developed by IBM and Red Hat, alongside IBM's watsonx AI and data platform, and the work done there covers LLM fine-tuning, model governance and enterprise deployment rather than research for its own sake. At the launch, IBM Senior Vice President of Products Dinesh Nirmal described generative AI as central to the company's overall growth strategy, built on collaborating with different ecosystems rather than working on the technology alone.

Where exactly is IBM's Kochi office?

IBM's Kochi base started inside the Brigade World Trade Centre tower in Infopark Phase I, Kakkanad, when IBM India Software Lab moved in on 23 September 2022, the same building that housed the 2022 Automation Innovation Centre and the 2024 GenAI Innovation Centre. Three launches in three years is a faster cadence than IBM has run at most of its other India campuses, and it says something that each one has been a distinct facility rather than an expansion of the same floor.

Why does IBM keep expanding in Kochi?
