How do I pay my Kerala water bill online?
KWA's Quick Pay portal is the official route. The steps:
- Open epay.kwa.kerala.gov.in on your phone or laptop.
- Search with your Consumer ID and Consumer Number, or with a mobile number you have already registered against the connection.
- Check the bill: the portal shows the bi-monthly water charge, any arrears, meter reading details and two dates, one to pay without a fine and a later one to pay with a fine to avoid disconnection.
- Add the phone number and email address where you want the receipt sent.
- Pick a payment option and pay. The portal then generates an online receipt you can download.
That first date is the one to watch. The bill tells you exactly when a fine starts, so pay before it and the question never comes up.
What are the KWA Consumer ID and Consumer Number?
The portal asks for two different things. The Consumer ID is a long plain number (the portal's example is "2342678940"), while the Consumer Number mixes letters, numbers and slashes (its example is "ABC/1000/D"). Type both exactly, slashes included.
Once you have found your connection, register your mobile number against it through the portal's OTP step. After that, the registered phone number is enough to pull up the bill next time.
Which payment options does KWA accept, and what do they cost?
| Option | Where | Service charge |
|---|---|---|
| UPI | QR code on the portal, to scan with GPay or PhonePe | Free on most gateways; Rs 2 on the Bank of India gateway |
| Net banking | Bank gateways on the portal, including SBI, Federal Bank and BillDesk | Nil on SBI epay, otherwise a flat Rs 3 to Rs 10 |
| Debit card | Same gateways | RuPay free on most gateways; other debit cards up to about 0.9%, or Rs 16 flat on one gateway |
| Credit card | Same gateways | About 0.8% to 1% of the bill (nil on SBI epay) |
| Wallets | Same gateways | Up to 2%, or a flat Rs 4.50 on one gateway |
| BBPS apps | Your bank or payments app, through the Bharat Bill Payment System | Set by the app |
The gateways note that GST or other government levies apply on top of these charges. Our advice: use the portal with UPI. It shows the full bill breakdown, usually costs nothing extra, and the card and wallet surcharges, small as they are, buy you nothing. Most gateways list their charges on the portal before you pay, so glance at the note under the one you pick. As of October 2026, the portal also showed a notice about payment issues with HDFC Bank, so pick another gateway if that one stalls. For anything the portal cannot sort out, KWA's offices work Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and are closed on Sundays and public holidays.
What if the money is debited but no receipt comes?
KWA's own instructions are clear. If your bank shows the debit but no receipt was generated, KWA asks you to allow 48 hours for the transaction to complete. If there is still no confirmation SMS or refund after that, email epaykwa@gmail.com or call 1916. The portal also says to check your dues or last receipt after 4 days to confirm the status.
Three things worth knowing before you hit them:
- After a failed attempt, the portal can refuse a second one with the message "There is already one failed payment today. Please try after 24 hours".
- Do not press back or refresh while paying; the portal warns against it.
- If you do end up paying twice, KWA says the excess is credited as advance and adjusted against your next bill or bills, so you will not lose it.
Advance payment, instalments and the Green Bill
The portal can also do three useful things:
- Pay in advance, with an incentive: you can prepay by number of months or by amount. The portal says 1% of the total payment is added as an incentive, capped at Rs 100, and only for online payments. Consumers with arrears are not eligible, so clear those first.
- Pay arrears in instalments: if arrears have piled up, the portal asks whether you want to pay an instalment or the full amount.
- Go paperless: the Green Bill option lets you opt in or out of paper bills using your Consumer ID and Number.
