The best way from Kochi to Madurai for most people is the overnight 16343 Amritha Express: it leaves Ernakulam Town at 00:35 and reaches Madurai Junction at 09:20, 8 h 45 min, with sleeper fares from about Rs 260 as of October 2026. Driving over the Western Ghats via Munnar is about 265 to 295 km and roughly 7 hours at the wheel, and overnight buses take 8 to 9 hours.

Train, bus or car: the short answer

Our honest verdict: the Amritha is the one to book. It is the fastest train on the route, it runs daily, and it turns the trip into a night's sleep. The 00:35 departure is the only catch, so get to Ernakulam Town early and keep your ticket handy.

Which train goes from Ernakulam to Madurai?

Four services run between the two Ernakulam stations and Madurai, per the railway timetable listings as of October 2026. Check the enquiry system before booking, because timings are revised.

The 16328 is the daytime option, and 11 h 10 min is a long sit; carry food. Not sure which Kochi station suits you? Our guide to Ernakulam Junction vs Town helps. Coming back, the 16344 Amritha leaves Madurai at 16:10 and reaches Ernakulam Town at 00:02, the 16327 leaves at 11:35 and arrives at 23:22, and the 16127 leaves at 18:45 and reaches Ernakulam Junction at 04:45.

Is there a direct bus from Kochi to Madurai?

Yes, but they are night buses. Booking sites list more than 10 a day, with the first leaving at 19:45 and the last at 21:45, taking about 8 to 9 hours. Fares run roughly Rs 400 to 700 depending on seater, sleeper or AC. Operators include Kerala RTC and private firms such as New Lucky Travels, with pickups at Edappally, Kalamassery, Aluva and Chalakudy, and drops at Mattuthavani bus stand in Madurai. Against the Amritha, the bus is no faster and costs more than a sleeper berth, so book it only when trains are wait-listed.

How long does it take to drive from Kochi to Madurai?

Via Munnar it is about 265 to 295 km and roughly 7 hours of driving: about 3.5 hours from Kochi to Munnar and about 3.5 hours from Munnar to Madurai, more with ghat traffic. The road follows NH85 (the Kochi to Thondi highway) through Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam, Adimali, Munnar, Devikulam, Bodinayakkanur, Theni and Usilampatti to Madurai. It is mountainous Western Ghats terrain, so do not plan a tight arrival time.

The upside is the scenery. Driving makes most sense as a two-day trip with a night in Munnar; our Kochi to Munnar guide covers the first leg. If you would rather stay on the plains, the Palakkad side is the train's route, and our Kochi to Coimbatore comparison covers that corridor.

From Madurai Junction to the Meenakshi temple

Meenakshi Amman Temple is about 2 km from Madurai Junction, around 10 minutes by auto or taxi. Arriving on the Amritha at 09:20 leaves the whole day for the temple and the old city. For more trips out of Kochi, browse our Guides section.
