When Was CUSAT Founded, and Why Does It Still Say "Cochin"?
The university started life in 1971 as the University of Cochin, a name it kept until it was reconstituted as Cochin University of Science and Technology in February 1986. That is ten years before the city itself was officially renamed from Cochin to Kochi in 1996, so the mismatch is not a case of the university clinging to an old name against a live alternative; there was no "Kochi" on paper yet when the reconstitution happened, and the university has simply never updated the name since the city moved on. The main campus runs along Pipeline Road in Thrikkakara, South Kalamassery, with a separate Lakeside Campus elsewhere in the city for its ocean science and fisheries departments, and a third campus, CUCEK, out at Pulinkunnu in Alappuzha district for its engineering college. CUSAT is not a single engineering college; it is a full multi-disciplinary university with 26 departments spread across its campuses, plus a wider network of recognised research centres run in partnership with outside institutions such as the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and the Kerala Forest Research Institute. Why Does CUSAT Have One of India's Best Laser Labs?
The answer sits inside the International School of Photonics, founded in 1995, which now runs one of the country's best-equipped laser laboratories, with facilities including a Master Optical Parametric Oscillator, a high-power Nd:YAG laser, a 12-watt Argon Ion laser, an optical fibre drawing facility and a ring dye laser. The school works on laser technology, fibre optic sensors, nonlinear optics and biophotonics, and trains more than 185 students across its integrated MSc, MTech in Optoelectronics and Laser Technology, PhD and postdoctoral programmes. Admission to CUSAT's undergraduate and integrated programmes runs through CUSAT CAT, the university's own common admission test, with ranks feeding into a centralised CUSAT counselling process rather than the state engineering entrance exam most Kerala students sit for other colleges. Lateral entry into B.Tech programmes has a separate Lateral Entry Test.
