Kochi to Thekkady: Bus vs Taxi vs Train, and Which One to Pick
Kochi to Thekkady is about 156 km and 4 to 5 hours by road, with no railway line. Bus, taxi and train routes compared, plus Periyar boating basics.
Kochi to Thekkady is about 156 km by road (some guides say up to 185 km, depending on route) and takes 4 to 5 hours, and there is no railway station in Thekkady. The cheapest way is a KSRTC bus to Kumily, the town 4 km from Thekkady, for roughly Rs 250 and 5 to 6 hours. A one-way taxi costs from about Rs 4,400 as of October 2026, which only makes sense for a group of three or four.

Bus vs taxi vs train: the short answer
| Option | Time | Cost (as of October 2026) | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi or self-drive | About 4 to 5 hours, about 156 km | From about Rs 4,400 (hatchback) to Rs 5,700 (SUV) one way, as quoted by one cab aggregator | You are three or four people, or want to stop on the way |
| Direct KSRTC bus | About 5 to 6 hours | Rs 239 to Rs 272 on reserved services listed by ixigo | You are one or two people and the timing suits you (our pick) |
| Train to Kottayam, then bus | About 1 h 15 min by train, then the hill road | Kottayam to Kumily bus fares from Rs 174 on EaseMyTrip | The direct bus is full or the hours do not work |
Our verdict: for one or two people, the bus wins on price by a wide margin; two bus seats cost about Rs 500 against more than Rs 4,000 for a cab. A taxi earns its fare only when three or four people split it, or when you want to take the winding ghat road at your own pace and stop at viewpoints.
How to reach Thekkady from Kochi?
By road, there is no other way in. Kerala Tourism describes Kumily as sitting on the highway that links Kottayam to Theni in Tamil Nadu via Mundakkayam, Peermade and Vandiperiyar, and road and bus routes from Kochi join it. The Periyar Tiger Reserve's official site notes that state buses run regularly from Kottayam, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
- Direct bus: ixigo lists KSRTC on the Ernakulam to Kumily route, with reserved KSRTC Super Fast departures such as 14:59 and 19:45 taking about 5 hours. Book reserved seats on the KSRTC site; our KSRTC online booking guide walks through it.
- Taxi: outstation cab fares quoted by one aggregator include driver charges and tolls. Ask any local operator whether the quote includes the driver's return trip, which is where one-way prices often differ.
- Self-drive: fine for a confident hill driver. Leave Kochi early so you are not on the ghat after dark.

Which is the nearest railway station to Thekkady?
Kottayam. Kerala Tourism puts it 114 km from Thekkady, and the Periyar Tiger Reserve site says about 110 km. From Kochi, trains to Kottayam take about 1 hour 15 minutes, with 13 daily services listed by trawell.in, and buses to Kumily leave from the Kottayam KSRTC stand. Our Kochi to Kottayam comparison has the train options. The catch: you still face the long hill road by bus or taxi, so the train only saves you the flat, traffic-heavy first section.
Periyar boating: the basics before you go
The lake cruise is why most people make the trip. These details are from the official Periyar Tiger Reserve booking site as of October 2026:
- Duration: 1.5 hours on Periyar Lake.
- Departures: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:15 am, 1:45 pm and 3:30 pm.
- Fare: Rs 255 per adult and Rs 85 per child, the same on weekdays and holidays. Park entry and the shuttle bus are charged extra.
- Reporting: be at the Aanavachal parking ticket counter 1 hour before your slot, and at the boat landing 30 minutes before. The landing is about 4 km from the parking area, reached only by the reserve's buses.
- ID: carry the same ID you used to book online.
Catching the 7:30 am boat means staying overnight; a same-day trip from Kochi is possible only for a later slot and means 8 to 10 hours of driving. Elephants and sambar deer are common sights, with a good chance of smooth-coated otters, the reserve says, but sightings are a matter of chance.
How many days are enough for Thekkady?
Plan at least one night. With 4 to 5 hours each way by road and the boat timings above, a same-day return from Kochi means a very long day for one boat ride. Two nights gives you an early cruise plus a trek or a spice plantation visit without rushing. Kerala Tourism suggests September to March as the best season.
